FAC questions

Ive managed to get round to sorting my FAC out, ive applied for .22 and had a punt at the .17hmr . The land on which i shoot is cleared for .22lr, theres roughly about 120 acres of rolling land which presents plenty of back stops.

Ive shot with the farmer with his .22lr he has a Ruger 10/22. After looking at peoples signatures i can see that these are a popular choice and seem good value for the money.

1. Are Ruger 10/22's a decent starter to get in to the world of FAC shooting?

2. Is there any other decent starter .22lr for around the £300.00 mark s/h?

3. Ive also seen that some .22lrs are bolt action and not self loading like the 10/22, is there any particular benifit to the bolt action over the self loading besides increased reliability?

4. Ive noticed the trigger pull on the 10/22 is quite heavy, can trigger kits be fitted to decrease the pull lbs ?

Cheers lads for all the advice...

Reed

Ive never experianced the .17hmr so i wouldnt know. I think the .22lr is simply brilliant, the only other "rifle" experiance i had was with air rifles. You say the hmr has more power, what sort of range would a competant shooter take rabbits at with a .22lr against the .17 hmr ?

Im guessing by how simple my questions are this has been covered time and time again...sorry !

The .22lr is ok to about 70 yards or more if you know the range and the drop, the HMR is pretty flat to 150 yards so is far easier to shoot. In my eyes its a better gun for a beginner because they aren't so prone to ricochet. If you've used the .22 you'll have heard it zing off to land somewhere it wasn't meant to and for me that is not funny and you don't get it with the HMR. The downside is its noisier but rabbits don't seem to mind, and the rounds are more expensive but quite similar to the cost of shotgun cartridges
