Pipmoff
After finishing night shift on Tuesday morning I came home put out the bins and recyling did my poop scooping fed the fish and the dogs then had a brew by which time I had woken up a bit so I decided to take the dogs for a walk round my step dads sheep field at first light. I grabbed the Benelli and my cartridge belt and off we went. Arrived at the field it was probably still about -2 at 7:30am. Let the dogs out and watched them run and play fight round the feed racks for a couple of minutes before heading off down the field watching the trees along the hedge row as well as what the dogs were sniffing about after ahead of me. As I got to the middle of the field a cock pheasant that I had walked past roosting in the tree lifted from behind me but flew around to my right I aimed & fired and down he went my Ridgeback was over and onto it in a couple of seconds he gave it a lick and walked off it was dead and of no interest to him as he couldnt chase it. It amazes me how easy it is to miss a bird in the trees when they are roosting and the trees are so bare. Although just before this I was watching a Barn owl that was sat looking at me from the tree prior this one so I maybe didnt pay too much attention to that tree. The bird was picked up and I carried on down the field. A hen pheasant then lifted from the hedgerow but she was very low and there were sheep behind so there was no chance of a safe shot a bit further down another cock lifted but at quite a distance and he crossed over the neighbours land where I do not have permission to shoot pheasants so again no shot. We headed back up the field along the opposite hedgerow and the dogs were sniffing about when they lifted 2 hen birds from just behind me again I took aim on the first one and fired and down she went and my dog checked her out and walked off just to confirm that she was dead when she hit the ground. I contemplated a shot on the second bird but chose to let her go on her way as I had my brace and had an enjoyable walk out when I could have very easily gone to bed. Also I generally do not shoot the hen birds as I would rarther leave a decent stock of hens to breed. So I ended up seeing 5 pheasants and took 2 for 2 shots which I was very happy with as they were both clean kills. I took a pic of the birds on my phone with my Boerboel pup sticking her nose in . http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll77/pipmoff/DSC00213.jpg Edited December 11, 2008 by Pipmoff
