There is no requirement to keep a gun in a cabinet. Its certainly the police's preferred means of security, but the law only requires you to take adequate precautions. If the gun is dismantlement, and access to each part is restricted there is no reason why this may not be adequate, indeed if you are traveling with a gun, say staying at a hotel etc, separating the parts and storing them in different places is the recommended procedure where no single secure facility is available.

 

So, yes, as long as the bits are not just lying around to be easily found and assembled, separating bits should be acceptable.
