Lamping

Hello to all. Be grateful for some clarity re. lamping. Have some experience with an uncle. This involved me holding the lamp (torch) with my uncle sitting ready with the gun. Everytime we heard a rustle, I had to point the lamp in that direction and if a rabbit was lit up, he had a shot. It worked ok, but didn't seem to be the most efficient way to be doing things - we surely couldn't hear everything that was out there and lots of the noises were related to the wind. Also, is netting required in the dark and is it necessary to inform the local police when working that late? If you could give me some of your tips, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

what you lamping with air rifle? rifle? shotgun? we usually walk or drive in pickup with one lamping (scanning the fields/hedges) for rabbits foxes, then driver stops when we spot something and if identified and safe it gets shot. Windy, dry nights are the best.

It is advisable to inform the police of the start time and when you finish.

Do you tell the police everytime you go lamping? - l don't. Don't like them best of times, let alone give them details of my nocturnal activites - or am l the odd one out? I can understand it if you have had trouble with being reported for whatever and then having a visit form them - then doing it after that on their advice - otherwise - should they know? (whats the official line?)

That sounds a laborious and futile way of lamping. You need a powerful red-filtered lamp (white light spooks rabbits more than red light), a 4x4 or the willingness to cover your land on foot and an intimate knowledge of the land. Get downwind, shoot fast and keep moving. The rabbits will hear you considerably earlier than you hear them. Static lamping only works on summer evenings.

I only bother informing the police on a few specific permissions, due to proximity to houses. I never bother at home.

It sounds like you might benefit from blagging an evening out with one of the PW members in Kent, to show you the ropes.

I never inform them. I find it gives them a better excuse to check on your actions when they've got nothing better to be doing.

Thanks to all for the responses. Is static lamping only recommended on summer eves due to the extended light or changes in their behaviour? Have a good spot for cover. Will liaise with police to be on safe side. I use a shotgun o/u.

Get out and moving, or you'll be sat waiting about and they'll eventually learn that dinner has been cancelled for the night, if you keep shooting the same spot all night. A bit of walking never does any harm. Garyb and I walk quite a few miles sometimes, when we've not got access to a 4x4

mostly, we we will be in sight of houses etc also get a lot of ****** on the land where we go sometimes so its best to let them know in case a member of the public reports someone lamping on the land. Saves hassle :sly:
