Tin Man Work
I wasn't happy with the accuracy of my 10/22 Sporting with a standard factory barrel (not so much the nut behind the butt I hoped) so I did some web research to see what I could do to avoid replacing everything - also wanted the thing to stay looking bog standard as far as I could. Lightened up the trigger by polishing the sear and action with a Dremel - also shimmed the action and fitted a recoil buffer. After that I pillar bedded the action screw (take down screw in American), and bedded the rear of the receiver. I then floated the barrel by opening up the channel in the stock, then bedded the first 2 inchs of the barrel, then resealed the barrel groove with stock oil. Job done! Zero movement in the stock now, floated barrel and lighter trigger - not much more you could do. I then went around and got 50 of every brand of .22 subsonic ammo I could find - Remmington, Winchester, RWS, Eley, Lapua, and CCI and a few others I can't remember. Shot each brand at 60yds with no notice of the first mag's result (they reckon the barrel settles to the new ammo going through - ?) and the results were very surprising: My 10/22 behaved like this: Lapua deadly tight groups but loads of stovepipe stoppages, RWS fliers everywhere, Remmington all over the place (like a shotgun pattern plate to be honest), Winchester good but with flyers, CCI good but loose groups, and Eley subs coming out a clear winner - consistent 3/4 inch groups; more than enough for my needs from a semi-auto. Why didn't it like the most inexpensive!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think now I'll be staying with the Ruger as it is - and I reckon apart from time and ammo, it has cost me about £25 to get to where I am. wannabefisher
ive had a chance now to properly use my green mountain. When you get a good idea of the elevation needed you can nail 100m+ rabbits 100% of the time. Great barrel!
