chewy0013
Hi all. After lots of advice from members and having shot a couple of rifle at my local gun club I have decided to go down the road of pcp. I really like the look of the BSA ultra and hornet both in single shot (and as you can get them both brand new for less than £300 they seem good value) what do people think of them? The ultra seems to get a better reviews from site like review centre and its cheaper, but people have said it has a big power curve due to the fact that it doesn't have a regulator rather a knock-open valve. I have read that they don't have many shots per charge. Does anyone know how many shots each has? Can you increase this by fitting a larger air tank or tuning the regulator or in the case of the ultra by fitting one?! If i were to get either of them how complicated are they? By this I mean will I be able to strip them down, tune it, clean it, ect and be able to put it back together? I study engineering so have a pretty technical mind. And finally, how easy is it to change the power? Im not asking how to. Just how easy is it. I don't want to buy a gun that is covered in anti tamper stuff, or thats limit is fixed. Before people jump down my throat accusing me of wanting to brake the law or inform me that the uk limit is 12 f/lbs and going over it is braking the law. If thats all you have to add to this post please do not reply. I DO NOT WANT TO MAKE THE GUN GO OVER 12 f/lbs. I ask because if I were to buy either of the rifles I want to be able to maintain a constant power level using different pellets with out an expensive trip to the gunsmiths. (being a student and all!) What do people think of them? Edited April 30, 2009 by chewy0013

chewy0013
Thanks guys. What do people think about the ultra? Does anyone else think that this anti tamper rubish is just a big con by the air rifle producers to make us all give them more money? Also, if you have a rifle with anti tamper screws on it and it does go over the legal limit you are still wholely liable in the eyes of the law. So whats it on there for? realtreedave
iv got an ultra in .22,it gives me 35 full power/consistent shots charged at 190bar.iv found it a very reliable and consistant rifle,at the moment it has a custom stock fitted so my 10 year old daughter can use it.as for diy repairs/tuning this is one gun i would leave to the experts,if you get caught with it over the limit and the anti tamper screws have been messed with they will throw the book at you.if you want a pcp that is easy to work on and tune try a stealth by gunpower, there is loads of imformation on the internet about this rifle[airforce condor in the states]

Also, if you have a rifle with anti tamper screws on it and it does go over the legal limit you are still wholely liable in the eyes of the law. So whats it on there for? Im not going to get into a discussion about the rights and wrongs of anti tamper. It is there because if it wasn't pcp's would probably be on ticket. As for airgun manufacturers making money on it - it is very much the opposite. Think about all the tiny warrenty repairs that usually get done by the local gunsmith (such as power tweaking) and he wont charge the manufacturer to do them. Now the manufacturer has to pay to pick up and return the rifle, and also their time to book it in fix it and book it out. If it goes over the legal limit yes you are still breaking the law even if the anti-tamper screws are intact. It is your responsibility to get the power of the gun regularly tested. I don't know of a case yet where a gun has been over powered, with antitamper screws intact, and gone to court. So I don't know how it stands. All I do know is that technically you are still in the wrong. I know it seems a bit silly but these are the facts Oh and by the way. Ultra is a cracking little gun. Had both the ultra and the hornet, yes you get more shots from the hornet. If you want a full size BSA go for the scorpian. Same gun as the hornet but with a bolt, so basically you only have to do one thing to cock it not two!
