game_boy
I've just been presented with a whole Buck. Any hints/tips on how long to hang it for? I'd planned on hanging it for a week with the skin on. And secondly the best way to cut it up? I want to make as much use out of it as poss. Many thanks, gb. Devilishdave
Seen this question posed before and as for the butchering side the answer was take it down to your local butcher and bung him a few quid to do it for you whilst you watch so you know how to do it for next time. Browning
I agree with DD. I'd read books and articles on butchering deer, but if I hadn't actually watched someone do it, and in turn was shown how to do it (Cheers Elma !!) I'd have had no chance of getting it right. webber
Ive never done it, but 10 days hanging is what is recommended. There is an excellent article in the current issue of sporting gun. webber
Wookie
A local butcher should be ok doing the butchering. Mine was quit good about it when I asked him if he could do the work if I "found" a muntjac or similar on my travels. All I had to do was drop it off and it would be in my freezer that evening. Nice bloke too, sells great pies Wookie
game_boy
How much did he charge you wookie? I've bought Sporting Gun and I must agree its a great article, how good does that loin look when he's stripping it off ??! My mates bringing over a hack-saw and we're going to do it. Looks relatively simple and something I can do. Got all the tools so will wait and see. Its not a big roe so it shouldn't be much of a problem. Then hack-saw all the bones up for the dogs, that way every thing gets used up. To all you guys who hang your own, do you never worry about the ticks that are on the carcass if you hang with the skin on? Would be intrested to know where and how you chaps go about dealing with the carcass when you get it home??? Cheers, gb.
