Gonna Shoot a Wabbit
hi all. Don and i were out last week. It was a balmy evening with hardly a breath of wind to speak of. In an effort to get used to my shooting sticks i have bought for deerstalking i decided to bring them to use on the bunnies. Once we got to the permission we agreed our areas to stalk, safe lines of fire etc and off we went. I approached the first gate and spied a bunny at 50yds. i quietly deployed the sticks moving very slowly, got the rifle into position and carefully aimed...... a gentle squeeze on the trigger and thump! 1st bunny in the bag. Wow! that was interesting as long a my movements are very slow that went very well. Normally i prefer to shoot at that range kneeling with obvious movement problems giving me away. I took a quick pic to share with you of the area i am in this evening. As i slowly made my way round it became obvious that there were a few bunnies round with myxy. As many rabbits as i have killed over the years it still appalls me when i see bunnies suffering like this. I culled the few i found and made sure the bunnies i kept were bright eyed and bushy tailed so to speak. I added a few more bunnies to the bag as i made my way round ar ranges from 30-60yds all taken cleanly off the sticks and i am getting the hang of slowly deploying them and getting the rifle into position.... all evening i only spooked one bunny by moving a little too quickly. I spotted a nice 3/4 grown bunny at 80yds and confirmed it a healthy one through the binoculars. i carefully stalked it down to 40yds, with the rifle in position....... a gentle squeeze on the trigger...... and a good clean miss...... D'oh!!! i had pulled the rifle a little too tightly into my shoulder and it had kicked up. A rookie mistake and i took myself off for a good talking to HA HA. no mistake with the next one cleanly taken at just over 50yds. As i made my way back i spotted these youngsters enjoying the sunshine, being babies and with no instructions to clear out the lot (this is vermin control not sport) i left them for now to enjoy the sun. I made my way back to meet don after cleaning the slain and had this little lot. not a bad start to the evening I am now happy shooting off the sticks, i will spend some more time on the range as i did prior to this evening but i am now confident about tackling bambi from a standing position off the sticks.
