crossie
Up at the crack of dawn, sat in the landy on a hill looking, not a bird in sight. Gave it till ten, when one solitary pigeon landed in some tall kale about an acre, right by the main road, on the side of a bean field by a house. Then another and another flew straight to the same place. How do I go about shooting this? Across the bean field is a 2 acre patch of kale mixed with wild seeds. Nothing on there. Sat there pondering and thought I know. I blew up a couple of balloons and placed them on sticks in the acre patch of kale. That was after I had set up on the 2 acre patch. The balloon worked and kept them off the acre patch. They came straight down in 2's and 3's. Brilliant day. Can't understand why they weren't going on the drills. Cranfield
Good thinking, I have tied tesco carrier bags on sticks to do a similar job. I hav4e noticed the pigeons are not hitting the drillings in my area, as hard as usual. There have been a few other comments on here, saying the same. crossie
Yes I've seen a few pigeons on drillings but in my area there seems to be a lot of bean fields with an acre or 2 on each field of kale mixed with wild, which hasn't been ploughed in and is a haven for quite a bit of wild life. In my area it's about 3 feet tall with bare patches in the middle. The pigeons seem to be eating this on the edges of the bean field and the kale and on the edges as well. The farmer couldn't believe how many pigeons I had shot. I shot 63 from about 10:30 until 3 in the afternoon. I christened my new gun. So used to the side by, I bought an o/u which took a bit of getting used to. I've often toyed with the idea when I've been shooting about putting things at one end of the field to deter them from that end.
