BASC press release

BASC opposes devolution of airgun law

18 June 2009……………………………………………….immediate release

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) will oppose any move – as suggested by the Calman Commission – to devolve power over airgun law to Scotland.

The current government in Westminster has resisted all calls to devolve firearms legislation. BASC has been involved in the discussions and is currently meeting Conservative Shadow Ministers to confirm the Party’s policy in the event of a change of government. BASC has consistently opposed devolution of firearms law and maintains that different legal regimes across the UK would create confusion, compromise law enforcement, do nothing for public safety and disadvantage the law abiding shooting community.

BASC director of firearms, Bill Harriman, said:

“The call for devolution of firearms control powers is an overtly political initiative that is not evidentially based. Scottish statistics show a low level of firearms incidents, which are in decline. Education and enforcement of existing legislation is undoubtedly the best way to address any problems.”

The vast majority of people who use airguns do so lawfully and there are already sufficient powers available to deal with the small minority who break the law. BASC believes that a new airgun law that only applies in Scotland will be almost impossible to enforce, and BASC will strongly argue against it.

Well I'm surprised your jaw hasn't hit the desk after reading that AIRGUNS are potentially going to be banned...!

Obviously the Dunblane school massacre is something horrific (Lee, you might need to look it up) however haven't the government learnt anything from their knee-jerk reactions?!

I can't picture someone running in a school with an airgun, recompressing the spring and fiddling about with a pellet between shots...!

A large caliber PCP perhaps, but shots range from 6-8  This is a start of something very bad for Scottland and the UK.. I will read on the shooting

There was a petition in Scotland to ban (or licence? it's unclear) airguns in Scotlands - allegedly signed by 11,000 people.

See http://news.scotsman.com/comment/Ian-Swans...guns.5395232.jp

The petition to No 10 asking the prime minister NOT to accede this to the Scottish parliament - ( see http://psa.bizhosting.com/whats_new.html which includes a link to the petition and a BASC press release.) Now - at 25/6/09 - there are 879 signatures on this petition - but it's early days yet.

As we all know airgun shooting is vital to our sport as it's the way most people get their first taste of shooting. If Scotland goes ahead with this scheme there will be great pressure for it to be adopted in the rest of the UK - that's obvious.

Let's hope all shooters (and their friends and families) sign the No 10 petition.

I think the proposal is to licence Airgun ownerhip in Scotland - and not a minute too soon , any responsable gun user should have nothing to concern them about this .

Its not aimed to stop pest controlers using an air gun as a tool but to stop idiots using them in built up areas to shot kids , cats , dogs and anyone they don't like!

I think the licencing of Airgunns will give increased credabillity to the legally held airgun users and help us distance ourselves from the Neds and Thugs who use airguns in such a way to undermine our use of them.
