Birdboy
Recently purchased a CZ 223 rifle that came with a Nikko Sterling Night Eater scope with it. Im looking at upgrading the scope as its a bit misty in comaprison to my fixed mag Leupold 3-9x50 VXIII i bought a few months ago for my HMR. Can you guys recommend a 50mm scope with good glass with a higher magnification to say 14minimum or ideally 16-18 ? I know leupold have got some lovely gear, but around £600. There seems to be a massive void between scopes to £250 - then start again at £550-600. I had thought about swapping the 2 scopes around that i have so the nighteater will end up on the HMR, but the leupold is perfect on the HMR. Just need better mag for the 223 but ideally over £300- £350. Thanks BB
Baldrick
Is the future scope destined for use in daylight, low-light or both? Foxes/vermin/deer or punching paper?
Birdboy
Hi Baldrick, Mainly fox, possibly later for deer. Manily shooting between 5pm and then onto the lamps later. BB
Baldrick
You need European or high-end Jap glass, and ideally a illuminated dot reticle. If money doesn't extend to illumination, you are better to opt for fairly fine reticle supported on thick stadia (vertainly not a fine varmit-type ret). Clarity of glass is more critical than reticle illumination or snazzy turrets etc. I have 6-24x50 or x56 scopes, but I rarely use them above 14x in the field. I stick with 9x for the majority, unless I am stalking in woodland. IOR and Meopta are two names that occupy the mid-ground, in terms of price. Both names are worth investigating, and I particularly like Meopta's value and performance. Scopes are a hugely subjective thing though, and opinions vary wildly. You are wise to try as many examples before you commit.
