AndyCM
Well I got back from a short break on Saturday with news from a mate that the first fields have been cut - hay fields and did I want to pitch up on a bale to wait for foxy Saturday night was out so we arranged for Sunday to meet and plan our approach. I am starting to think my mate is getting lazy as I always offer any plot and he picks the nearest one every time Anyway we had a few extras to contend with on Sunday - a band were rehearsing in one field so we gave that a wide birth. I dropped my mate off and parked the car, on I walked as far as I could go and found a nice place to pitch up and wait for foxes to show. It was arond 7:30pm so plenty of time for some action after about 30 mins along come three lost ramblers two fields off of the nearest footpath. " Oh, Oh, sorry to disturb you, we're looking for the train station, do you know where it is?" :o :o :o I had unloaded and slowly taken off my face veil and returned to the vertical while watching these numpties about 150 yards away - saw them have a double take, but they kept coming. Anyway, I got rid of them, warning my mate to be on the lookout for these fools and settled back for a wait. Then once things settled down about 45 mins later I saw a large brown shape come bounding into the field from the left. At first I thought a puppy pointer - all legs and crazy. I have shot this plot for 7+ years and never heard or seen of any deer being present. Once it stopped.....it was clearly a Roe Doe, very young and jumpy as anything, running around and spooking itself I was half expecting a Buck to show and give it a good rogering the way it was acting. It eventually settled and started slowly making its way around the field perimeter, getting to within 30 yards of me - I wish I had a camera with me this day....all thoughts of fox had vanished as I was happy to watch this Roe. Then SPLASH :( , some daft mutt comes tearing through the river and chases the deer off. A scruffy mutt, deaf and a bit blind but can sense deer ok......this stupid thing now does not want to return the water jump and is happy barking at me on the way back Tonight is a bit of a lost cause with all this disturbance....I have to move as this mutt will not leave the field....despite me chasing it off a couple of times. I eventually see the owner cross the river to retrieve the mutt after yelling at it for ages. Mmmmmmm. I find a new plot, still safe from where my mate is and sit down...there is NO WAY I'm going to see a fox tonight. About 20 mins later and the light has gone, we meet at the car and my mate saw two but not safe shots so we call it a night. He's chuckling at the stupid mutt's antics and is really pleased to hear I saw a Roe. Monday & Tuesday, we are both desperate to return, but downpours scrap that. Wednesday is still heavy showers but I resolve to go whatever the weather and get a soaking if I must No band, No ramblers, No stray mutt, that's better This time we decide on a long walk in with my mate dropping off and me walking on - taking a good scan as we go. One field in I scan at the gateway......a few magpies in the distance....then we talk over plans some 20 yards into the field. I break off the conversation and hit the deck...the bipod is already down... there is a fox sniffing around some 160 yards away. It's funny how flat fields suddenly become wildly undulating when you get prone I can just see his top half. I wait, there is no rush he'll soon show a better profile....my mate has other ideas and starts squeeking :o ...this could really stuff things as I have no way to track him and my mate standing in the open can hardly help. I decide to rush the shot as the fox lifts his head. I chest shot, a little high but he's down. We decide to leave this one where he falls, to give the next ones something to sniff A much better start. My mate plots up and I carry on, one good point about Sunday was that I found a new stile that has potential for a shooting point. I have my long bipod today (the bales were cleared, so no bench rest shooting) and find the stile makes a great back rest to use the long bipod. I get settled and another fox appears from my side, at 150 odd yards, he decides to turn tail, so gets dropped on the spot. The wind has dropped and a nice THUD comes back. About 30 mins later another appears from my mates direction, obvoiusly not crossing his path - as it's sniffing around between us I half will the fox to go his way , but no after a while it comes in my direction, at 120 yards and before he makes cover he's dropped. A good result, I let my mate hold my torch for the photo The set up He'll probably get his own back on Friday....we're off after Roe Bucks on another patch.
