Steyr Pro Hunter . 243 - Twist Rate & Prefered Food

I have used said Steyr but not owned one. It's a 1:10" twist, which is absolutely typical for a stalking rifle. The slower 1:12" twist is more suited to rifle destined to shoot 55-70gr 'varminting' bullets. The Steyr I used performed best with 95g Nosler Ballistic Tips, driven hard. On the .243s I have had with 1:10" twists, I got good results with everything from 87gr to 100gr. Even 70gr shot well. The most consistent .243 factory ammunition I used was Norma 58gr V-Max, Federal 70gr BTs and either RWS or Norma 100gr soft-points. Sako ammunition is very good. Remington and Winchester is mediocre. The Norma/RWS rounds are not cheap, but shot blindingly well in the 1:10" barrels I had, almost as well as lovingly-crafted handloads.

You'll appreciate that no two barrels are alike though...

Thanks Baldrick,

Good advice. Thanks for the response. Im thinking home loading could be the way forward, as the local RFD's are now around £24 per 20 in something like a Winchester, which as you said is mediocre. Its taking the £200 leap of buying all the kit !

Trust me, buy the kit! It takes no time at all to throw out 20 decent rounds once you're set up and the cost saving over premium ammo will make you more keen to waste bullets in practice. That can only be a good thing, the more rounds you lob down it the better you'll know it. I don't know why factory ammo has to cost so much in the bigger calibres. If I can make rounds at 1/4 the price of factory, my components are more expensive than theirs due to bulk discounts, and their machines throw out god knows how many rounds to each of mine, they should be cheaper! Someone's making a killing!

You don't need loads of stuff either. £100 should get you started :good:

£100 all in ? Id be tempted if it was around that figure. Ive looked in the buy and sell listings and cant see anything, so i will keep looking. So are the rounds you are producing approx 30p each ?

Thanks NJC
