Good Hard Varnish or Lacquer

Hi Baikiel Boy...

I use Blackfriars clear polyurethane varnish on painted handles or ocassionally three thinned coats (10 parts of Varnish to 1 of White spirit) of yatch varnish.

Both work equally as well. The secret is several thin coats rather than one thick one.

If you have used a hazel shank just rub this down with fine wire wool and work in some bees wax polish leave it to dry off and buff it with a old towel or similar.

I assume you have used enamel type paints for the pheasant if you have avoid any cellulose based varnish or laquer as this may well craze the paint or soften it and leave you with an unholy mess.

Please post up a picture. I like to see fellow stickmakers work.

Cheers.

FM.

Hi FM, Thank you for your reply I have been reading about Blackfriars clear varnish. I usually varnish all my sticks (not handles) as you say yacht varnish thinned. I have not used beeswax maybe I will try it. I have used acrylic paints and put a acrylic artist varnish over painted area, which I think is not good enough. I have tried to post picture in sporting pictures unfortunately it will not allow me to send this picture, I will get further instructions from my son and post as soon as possible. Thanks for the advise of the cellulose varnish and laquer on enamel paints but I will probably not use enamel paints. Regards baikiel boy.

Hi F.M. The book arrived this morning and I have not seen this one before, so thanks very much mike. I have had a skim through it and it looks very good and informative. I will take it with me on holiday next week, should provide some interesting reading. I have finished the stick with Blackfriars polyurethane rubbed down and then waxed polished. I did not rub down "feathered areas" just coated them. The Gallery pages are something else!!!!! Thank you once again. Regards baikiel boy.
