Why we Shoot Foxes

Madmanx,

You can definitely squeak foxes in daylight, especially at this time of year.

The biggest problem is which direction will they come from (its behind you!) I did a fair bit of it with a shotgun before I got my FAC - if they don't smell or see you they come really close.

Basically, wind in your face (or no wind at all even better) looking towards an area where the foxes are likely to come from. Just don't move at all - if they can't smell you or see you move they can stare straight at you and not see you as a threat.

On looking around (moving head only) I try to do this really slowly so that they don't pick up on the movement (if the area you are shooting over has lots of ground cover that makes things difficult). Come August / September and harvested fields, just perfect.

Also try to sit in the shade if possible (and watch for sun reflecting off the scope/binos) - and don't get "skylined" - if a hedge I am sitting against is a bit bare some camo netting (folded over a few times) can create a more solid background.

Sometimes you'll get them coming too quick - running straight at you.

I was out walking the dog the other night (no gun) just around some horse paddocks and I spotted a fox about 100-120yards away. I stopped and watched it for a while just sniffing around, and decided to practice calling, just using my mouth - nothing for 3 to 4 mins - it just ignored me. Then (change of pitch or something) it ran straight in to 20odd yards before realising I was not an injured rabbit and it legged it. All good fun (the land is not shot so I can't be accused of educating foxes!)

Good luck
