Devilishdave
on fully auto the felt recoil with 7.62 is neglagable. Tests have proven that automatic fire from assault rifles at anything more than close quarter battle is a waist of ammo for anything other than pinning the enemy in place. single aimed shots are the way forwards if you want to hit targets. on auto most will hit central with the first not to far of centre with the second and miss with the third. The LSW on auto with the butt strap, bipod and rear pistol grip is much better and the GPMG on its tripod on fully auto is the dogs danglies and can engage targets out to 1800m. The 7.62 weapons designed to fire high volumes of sustained automatic fire tend to have interchangeable barrels that are typicaly changed every 200 rounds. the GPMG can get rid of a belt of 200 rounds in 16 seconds. when you see the tracers close one behind the other there is normaly 4 rounds between each tracer! Wookie
What ws it the Yanks had problems with in VietNam with the M60? If they did more than 200 or so rounds on full whack the barrel went red and then bent! The loader had to carry a spare barrel and a pair of asbestos gloves around with him! Isn't the longest recorded kill creditied to some bloke in the falklands that put a scope on a .50 browning and shot someone at about 1500m? dunganick
i thought it was in afghanistan, to a sniper using 338 lap mag in a british accuracy international 'sniper rifle' at about 2.5km, 2nd shot kill
Wookie
I feel a Google search coming on! http://www.vpc.org/studies/sniper.htm - "The longest confirmed sniper kill of the Gulf War was reported to have been made by a Barrett Model 82A1 sniper rifle at a range of 1,800 meters" Couldn't find anything about Afganistan, but there was an artical about a Spetsnaz bloke that shot a Mujahadeen at 1000m Wookie

Devilishdave
The IRA were regularly hiting our boys in south armaugh in the early 90s with The Barret Light Fiftyat over 1 mile (1600m). I have watched army snipers shoot watermellons on Dabrijna rangeas at 1000m with 7.62 infact even one of my young apprentices acheived kills at that range with the AI L96 The best intermediate sniper rifle I have used is the H+K PSG1 Edited June 3, 2005 by Devilishdave
Sergeant
I must aggree with the felt recoil, although the 7.62 seems to move furthur off target than 5.56 during recoil. As to barrels heating up, heat haze can be seen on the L98 after about 25rnds
