shooting pigeons

Recommended Posts

Okay well my grand parents have asked me to deal with the large amounts of pigeons the have in their back garden in a semi rural village. now it is a decent size garden but has houses either side. So do you think i would be alright using the .410 or should i use the air rifle just to stay on the safe side and not scare every one. Also dont worry they have a veg plot so i can justiy it for protection of crops :good:

Good work on the new permission :)

As the other chaps have said, you'll be better off with the air rifle.

Happily, since it's in the garden and the pigeons will be fairly used to human activity you'll be able to set yourself up in a nice comfy hide/shed, and check your ranges, and check/manufacture a backstop in anticipation. This is for pest control, so bait them into a safe position if you have to (supermarket cheapo tinned sweetcorn is good for this).

Make sure your backstop does actually stop the pellets (you can get terrifying ricochets off of wood), and that you're not going to harm anything unintentionally with your shooting (creeatures in compost heaps, for example). As has been said, the pellets must stay within the boundaries of the land over which you have permission.

Sounds like a peach of a job, are they wood pigeons or ferals? Any bunnies hassling the veg plot?

Hello 1234, Sounds like the prisoner in Les Miserables! If you shhot them are you going to eat them? Simplest way to prepare them is not to faff about with all that plucking. Cut through the skin down the breast bone (that's the side nearest the ground when they're flying), peel the skin back a bit each side and just fillet out the breasts

Good luck Bill

I dont want to take this too far off tangent, so ill add my 2p worth and say air rifle deffinatly.

On the prep for eating point, im not saying your wrong with the simplest way to prep the birds as ive not tried it (but will do), but have you tried this method? ill expand below.

Remove both wings by firmly grasping wing in one hand, and the body in the other and twist round and round until the wing completly severs, repeat with the other wing. Then make a small insision with a knife at the base of the brest bone, around 1inch is ample, insert your index finger along with your middle finger here and run up along the inside of the brest bone towards the head. Once your fingers are completly in as far as possible, apply outward pressure from the base of the brest bone, and inward pressure from your finger tips, as if your trying to turn the bird inside out, which is infact what it will do. As the wings have been removed you will find the entire brest bone, along with two suculent brests will peel away from the skin with little effort.

I Like this method as it takes less then 20secs per bird once mastered and i can drop the brests straight into my cool box for washing and bresting back home.

Hope this helps.
