feeding a new puppy

Loads of good foods and makes out there and varying prices and quality. I went through the same question with my lab.

I spoke to the people at Skinners who were really helpful and plumbed for their products as it seemed good quality plus reasonable value.

so I fed Field and trial puppy - complete meal in a dried biscuit - I fed this until 8 months then moved onto the field and trial crunchy which is specifically formulated for the important 8 - 18 month growth period.

You can then move onto an adult food from there.

My lab will be 18 months at Christmas and feeding this combo I could not be more happy with his condition and growth.

Remember to ask what he / she is on at present. If you are going to change to a different brand or food type then you will need to wean them onto it to minimise any stress / upset stomach from the change. I did this over the course of a couple of weeks by gradually introducing a bit more of the new biscuit everyday until he was on the Skinners.

Im no dog expert and not connected to Skinners in any way. This worked for me and I have been really happy with the Skinners range plus its not stupid money once your out of the 8 month stage.

If you google Skinners they have a good informative website.

Getting a springer pup 8 week old next week.

1st time with dog can some one advise is their a special food for puppies. :good::lol:

Get a working dog puppy food, and at 8 weeks I soak them in warm water for five mins to soften them up a little and it also produces a nice gravy. But gradually leave out the water as their teeth should be strong enough at this age to bite the biscuit.

I use Chuddleys Snippits for my terriers, as they do a good puppy food with a small biscuit, then at 5/6 months I'll move them on to the adult larger biscuit. They also do one for larger dogs like Spanials and Labs etc as pups and adults.

Sound advice from Frank.

Everyone on here, myself included, will all give you advice based on what we use for our own dogs, so you'll end up with 101 different choices. As Frank says and I totally agree, you could do a lot worse than just asking the breeder what they use, continuity is then maintained but more important familiarity for the pup as well.
