Tobyb525
Hi, I'm just wanting to know if anyone can clear this up before I start calling the fao about it. Both the gamekeeper and myself want me to get a .17 hmr for bunnies and the odd fox. At 15 I think I can have a licence and a gun(as a gift) but it all seems vague about if I can use one unsupervised. Could anyone shed some light? Cheers
Paul223
Copied from BASC site here YOUNG PEOPLE AND FIREARMS The British Association for Shooting and Conservation Ltd, Marford Mill, Rossett, Wrexham LL12 0HL Tel: 01244 573000 Fax: 01244 573013 SECTION 1 FIREARMS – INCLUDING RIFLES, MUZZLE-LOADING PISTOLS HANDGUNS AND CERTAIN TYPES OF SHOTGUN UNDER 14 YEARS OF AGE No-one under the age of 14 may use a Section 1 Firearm except for target shooting as a member of a Home Office approved rifle club; or at a shooting gallery where no rifles larger than .23 inch calibre are used (e.g. at Fairs). 14 TO 16 YEARS OF AGE At the age of 14 a person may hold a firearm certificate and may then be given firearms and ammunition within the conditions on the certificate. The law does not set a minimum age at which the holder of a firearm certificate may shoot without adult supervision. That is left to the discretion of the parent or guardian. 17 AND OVER On reaching the age of 17, the holder of a firearm certificate may hire or purchase firearms and ammunition in accordance with the conditions on that certificate. THE FIREARMS (AMENDMENT) ACT 1988 The above act made it lawful for someone of, or over, the age of 17 to borrow a rifle from the occupier of private land and use it, on that land, under the supervision of the occupier but only under the conditions on that certificate. Under these circumstances the rifle can also be borrowed from a “servant of the occupier”, for example a gamekeeper. Tobyb525
Thanks, I have seen that already thats what has made me look into it. The keeper spoke to the firearms officer a while back who said no licence untill 17. Probably best I phone him myself and find out whats going on. Theres lots of conflicting info around.
