curing/ tanning animal skin

Years ago, I cured a complete sheep skin using saltpetre and alum. (Google for tanning a pelt using these two words and

you should get the necessary instructions). I stretched the skin, wool down after washing, across a pallet and scraped the

skin clean of any flesh before rubbing the mixture into the skin. I left it under shelter outdoors to air dry. This worked for

me but try the method on a rabbit pelt before experimenting with Charlie. All the best, :good: Rob.

you could get some borax http://www.healthleadsuk.com/house-and-hom...rax-1-kilo.html http://www.greenshop.co.uk/search/results....uso5ncekllvpu32 (apparently they also sell it in boots the chemists, dunno where, but its generally american) skin the hide via the stomach or back, scrape as much fat off as possible, and then just rub as much borax in as you can. it acts as a preservative, so if you leave any flesh in the toes etc, you should really pile it in there so it doesnt rot. leave it for a few weeks somewhere cool, dark and dry and it should dry up nicely.

you can make the inside from whatever you like...some people tie up bundles of wool, some use foam replica forms, some make a plaster cast of the carcass and fill it with some kind of foam (non expanding, 2 part foam)or something. when the skin is on, use pin to hold up the face in the right position, and check it from time to time to see if the skin is sagging while it dries.

also the noes should be filled with clay at the back, cos it shrivels and dries  and hol up the ears with card board and hair pins or paper clips.
