South Wales Police were alerted to the accident, believed to be a mid-air collision, just before 11am on Wednesday.

Jeff Tildesley, Deputy Mayor of Bridgend Council, said he believed at least two people were killed.

Speaking from the scene of the crash, he told BBC Radio Wales: "I can see some of the wreckage of an aircraft touched on one of the sand dunes here, surrounded by lots of police vehicles. We are hearing unconfirmed reports of two fatalities."

Mr Tildesley said he understood that the two aircraft had clipped each other's wings.

Clive Langdon, speaking from the Prince of Wales pub, which was being used as a base for emergency services staff attending the incident, said: "There are two aircraft which have collided.

"Apparently they have found two bodies and they are looking for two more, from what I can gather. I've heard they were trainees from RAF St Athan."

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: "Officers are attending at the scene. Inquiries are ongoing to establish what has taken place.

"No further information is available at this stage."

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed they attended "a major incident" in the Porthcawl area.
