hello, looking at that split in the middle it might not be possible to turn a large bowl but a few smaller ones instead,

    Thanks for the reply.

I would be happy to be guided by whoever undertakes the turning.

I have seen a few YouTube videos where the wood with splits is placed a resin and then turned - but I don't have a clue as to what are the rights & wrongs of wood turning.

  2. I have been given a piece of wood approx 12 x 12 x 4" that I am told is Lignum Vitae. Photos below.

It is very heavy and I would like it turned into a bowl.

Would anyone on here be able to do this please? I'm happy to pay for time, expense, materials used etc plus to & from post / Evri (I don't think even they can break this).

    Thanks in advance.

the more i look at it ...i think it is an AYA Best Quality early 70's or even earlier model...not a #2

    I would agree with that.

I have owned several AyA No2's and all had detachable locks. The one I have owned for the last few (many?) years is a 1976 single trigger - with detachable locks.

If the seller sent an email to Aya at aya@aya-fineguns.com with the serial number, they would let them know.

All this hype about ev cars catching fire did we not have a batch of Vauxhall's catching fire not long ago?

Two shiploads carrying several thousands of completed (German?) cars have sunk in the past couple in the years, blamed on EV's. This one and one earlier

I am sceptical about YouTube for this. When I realised computers where going to rule our lives over thirty years ago I accepted that one or two finger typing would not get me to a high enough level. I asked around and enrolled at the local college to learn to touch type at night school. Best investment in time and money I ever made. Without this I could not have done my job, particularly working from home without a Secretary or PA. Just worth thinking about!

This is what my wife (very competent typist) recommends too.

If I start wrong it can only get worse - plus, being an official old *** now, I can get "job application enhancement skills" courses for free.

    Thanks for all replies.

  8. I have decided it is time to move on from my two fingered tapping.

Can anyone recommend any method / process / YouTube (etc) videos that worked for them please?

    Thanks in advance.

Has anybody considered casting a female thread around the male thread?   The fitting for a standard lamp would not be very highly stressed, and would only occasionally be removed and replaced.

I would be inclined to wrap the male thread in clingfilm, wind copper wire loosely around it, and fill the gaps with Araldite.    Any available tube could be used for the outer mould  -  ideally something that was a snug fit over the circular base below the male thread.

I have repaired lots of broken objects using Araldite reinforced with wire.   It might or might not prove satisfactory for this tripod thread, but the cost of trying would be negligible.

    Hopefully sorted then 👍

Not much stress involved at all I would think but possibly sorted with my (new!) best friend in the village who reckons he can 3D print a threaded cap. We shall see......

I have a tripod here that measures about 2" by 13 tpi.   Apparently every manufacturer up to 1909 used their own threads.

I guess they could do when it was just for parts made in house, 2" by 13 tpi is definitely made up.

@Eyefor did you ever find out what the thread was?

9 hours ago, Andy H said:

    13 Tpi is almighty close to 2mm thread pitch , Could it be a 38 x 2mm thread .https://www.amazon.co.uk/Burkit-Metric-Threading-Machine-Thread/dp/B0B5DFN7W8

Thanks for all replies and my apologies for the delay in reply but we have been away.

Found my old thread gauge and it is 13 TPI so I might try the 38 x 2 as that might work.

Rather than highjack Eyefor's post where he objected to my referring to PWers as "randoms", what would be an acceptable collective noun for PWers?

I appreciate that "murder" has been taken for crows, "wunch" for bankers, "pride" for lions and "pack" for thieves.

    Any suggestions?

Hi. I didn't "object" (or if it read that way, I apologise) but I did think "randoms" was a bit harsh as there are many very helpful people on here.

As for a collective noun how about an insignificance - but I understand that is already applicable to Estate Agents?

If it is that old it could be a special thread to that company,  Many company’s did this. Attached is a chart of the various threads per inch. There is also a Brass thread that the railway used a lot and is 26 tpi.  You need to use a tpi gauge to measure, you can’t be far from me near Milton Keynes if you need it measured

Thanks. If I get stuck I'll let you know but I should be able to find my pitch gauges if they are where I think they are.

  13. 29 minutes ago, amateur said:

In that case, you would have the skills and knowledge to stick a rule or a pair of calipers on the thread and get an accurate count, rather than asking this bunch of randoms 🤣

Sitting on a pile of rubble awaiting plumbers who would "definitely be here by 10am" (today), I don't have access to calipers or anything to get an accurate measure - but I do have access off my laptop to this "bunch of randoms" (bit harsh? 😉) and a tape measure of the threaded collar (close enough to 1/2") gives me more than 6 tpi for whit.

His calipers are with his pitch gauges 😄😄

True. And in my reloading kit.
