Another punishment for hard work and being successful?!

So a higher rate tax payer has to spend 50+ years working until getting to state pension age.

Pay higher rate tax and massive amounts of national insurance.

Then after paying in all their life, contributing significantly more tax and NI than most, they aren’t entitled to a pension because they’ve paid into a private pension scheme?

Whilst someone who’s failed to save or make any provision for themselves gets one?

    Outrageous.

Totally agree with your above post Lloyd,

All I want personally out of this or any sucessive government is what I have been promised and what I am due to having signed up to the programme having constantly contributed into it since starting work many many moons ago, its bad enough that the goalposts were changed prolonging the event without a fight.

When mine does eventually kick in it will subsidise my personal pension which some seem to think should be enough, what they apparently fail to recognise is that the contributions made into private pension provisions are monies not spent either enjoyed or squandered during a lifetimes employment, but monies invested in oneself so as not to rely wholely on the so called state.

Some folks have some strage ideas, but not the first time I heard it, usually its from the green eyed monsters of envy.

    Glad that you got sorted👍

Fingers crossed it does the job and lasts out, its a frustration not having access to lathe and milling machines since retirement so as to be able sort little issues like this one out as I have done for previous 50 years 😶, hey ho what else am I to spend the pension on if not more shooting related gear 🙂

  3. For anyone in the same position of sourcing spares for "older guns" and as well as the suggestions offered above, many thanks gents.

John Knibbs has a selection of various guns being broken for spares along with a comprehensive lists of parts advertised on their website,

Fortunately they have a 12G Lincoln No2 that appears to have the same size firing pins as the 20G that I require and which was confirmed by a phone call.

Purchased both top and bottom pins for a grand total of £15 each with a couple of quid postage so the Lincoln should be back up and running as soon as they land.

Cheers Boggy, Just in touch with Mike, sounds promising and fingers crossed, if not I may have to get one made as being told it's an old gun,

since when was 2001 old ?

I was out with a 1924 and a 1958 as well yesterday, one is definitely old with the other approaching.... 2001 definitely not 🙂

  5. Just managed to shear the bottom firing pin on my 2001 Lincoln No2 20g which I suspect remained stuck out and not returning home due to possibly being gummed up through lack of use as its been in the cabinet since being purchased second hand back in 2016, no doubt I will discover the issue when I strip it down.

I bought this back then to teach one of the grandaughters that showed an interest for all of five minutes and got it out again today to take 13yr old grandson out who has more of an interest having been out with me on the pigeon and game for the last few seasons and which is ideal for him as a starter gun, we only managed 20 carts before the mishap.

Searching the internet Lincoln are made by Rizzini and appear to share many interchangeable parts, that said I dont seem to be able to track any spares stockist down.

Can anyone point me in the direction of getting hold of Rizzini/Lincoln spares other than going direct to manufacturer or anyone who can make one from pattern (broken one).

    Cheers

  6. Came across "Auto Smart Glass Clear" a few years ago which I found to be the best glass cleaner I have used to date, bought 5L for around £25 which will probobly see me out, used neat does a good job on all things glass and water beads off.

Lenovo (formerly IBM's PC division before being sold to the Chinese) makes very good bits of kit.

On the data recovery aspect from the old disk - it maybe the case that the data is still safe on the old machine but the bit that contains the 'boot partition' is broken. You can inexpensively find out by removing the old disk (YouTube is your friend here for instructions on how to do) and buying one of these: itrust USB 3.0 to SATA Adapter Cable for 2.5" SSD HDD Drives - External Converter and Cable,USB III converter

When plugged into another PC the 'old' disk might still be readable (as long as it isn't encrypted, i.e. MS Bitlocker).

Just on with this now, in the process of swapping the single platelet out from the existing HDD to a new one as old HDD wasn't recognised as being present at all, I think on investigation original motor was initially stuck but managed to damage heads swapping platelet so second new hdd purchased for second attempt.

Wise words! It is a fact that men tend to brush off or ignore symptoms in the hope that they will go away.

There is an old saying that "Ignorance is bliss" but believe me, it can also be a  hidden Killer.

  9. Had endoscopy and colonoscopy both on same day one after the other just last year due to a couple of symptoms, rocket fuel did the business in no time clearing things out and I have no doubt it could be introduced as a weight loss programme if used regularly 🙂 as I’m convinced I lost at least two stone during the process, we need to undergo these little inconveniences now and then to help keep things in check and fortunately all was good to a certain extent having only found a hernia in my case.

As a side note, we also need to keep a check on any kind of unusual symptoms that may sneak up on us now and then and, in the words of one of my consultants  “we should pester our GPS more than we do as that’s what they are there for” and help catch things early if they are lurking about before they get chance to manifest.

  10. Was in the cotswolds for a few days last week with some areas harvesting and taking advantage of the drier days, back home now and rain rain and more rain, lots of flattened crops around me and after a morning and afternoon’s combining on fields behind me the farmer is yet again rained off… not looking good for them as forecast for all night

  11. My 10 year old Lenovo flex touchscreen eventually bit the dust a short while ago with the HDD failing which I’m still in the process of attempting to retrieve but that’s another story… like a dork didn’t do regular backups

Where should I be looking to purchase a replacement from ?
Looking online and it’s a minefield, I don’t need anything  fancy , just for home use, browsing, forums and YouTube etc not huge storage as will be backing this up on SSD now lesson learnt….

Are the refurbished offerings from the various companies any good ?
Struggling with the possibility of having to pay a couple of hundred or more out for a second hand one as opposed to double for new….

Are there companies out there that sell “older” models that are perfectly ok without having latest technology and that have been superseded by new models

Minimum 14” touchscreen would be nice running windows, defunct Lenovo was 500gb but not necessary

    thanks in advance

    PC board ok?

I’m Presuming so with the unit having been purchased as being new,

I’m strongly suspecting it is the heads that I moved out of position on the ramp and then back into position to create clearance to remove/replace the platelet that I have disturbed and possibly damaged that the issue,

Might try pc a pc board swap from old drive to see if same symptoms as nothing to lose.

  13. Saga continues,

Picked up brand new identical drive off the auction site with the intention of swapping the heads out as a starting point as everything else looked fine, intact and as clean as a whistle when the original drive was initially opened up and with the drive having a single platter which should theoretically make the task even easier.

Having studied various YouTube video’s, The Idea was to remove heads on the old drive and then simply transfer new ones over as they live in a parked position on a ramp at side of platter, simples….

Bit of a faff removing the old heads with a home made “separator” in place and a tip picked up off YouTube with regards to fashioning one out of plastic strip folded in two but meanwhile noticed a stiff possibly stuck drive motor which got me guessing if that was the real issue despite being assured the drive was spinning up when checked and prior to removing it from the laptop by one who knows better than me…

So I then decided to swap the platter over instead and leave everything else in place and in situ on the new drive which being brand new and unused should guarantee all else should be good, this being with the exception of moving the parking ramp a couple of mm aside with heads still parked on it so as to facilitate platter removal and replacement, look feasible as you can see below.

    07AD39DE-3B91-4AF3-8EE2-7D7BA4A83C87.jpeg.43ba178b10a813d3d04599fdc588c20c.jpeg

All seemed to go well apart from slight fiddle and faff moving ramp and heads aside and then back into place.

job done, drive cover replaced, drive plugged into borrowed cradle and then plugged into sons computer….. and nothing detected.

Thought about it for a while and decided to remove drive lid, secure the arms/heads with screw to its spindle and power it up to see what, if anything, was happening.

What I am getting is the motor spinning up temporarily, a couple of beeps and a couple of twitches from the head arms and then motor shutting down and which I now suspect are the arms/heads are possibly stuck and also possibly fubared in situ on the parking ramp.

Not wanting to progress further and risk platter damage attempting to use either of the heads, Plan “C” is to consider purchasing another new unused drive of the auction site and swap out the new heads into the first new unit, would be great if I could get a hold of a proper separating comb prior to doing so….

Would also have been great to spot the stuck motor, if that’s what it was, and retry drive before having removed the original heads, but we are where we are as they say, hopefully fat fingers is just the issue here and next head change will be successful.

  14. First, Longest in photos at 28” is a 1952, 65mm chamber, tight on its face but has had stock replaced.

Second, Shortest in photos at 24 3/4” is 1924 and all original but a little loose on its face, marking show 12mm and 2” chamber.

Would like them to go as a pair to someone who will enjoy them or just save them as I did.

    £80 for pair

  15. Had same previously on several occasions that effected couple of areas on head and face and couldn’t figure out what it was, I’m convinced now that on each occasion it was down to stress levels and getting constantly wound up tighter than a bow string and mainly with work related bo-locks that I shouldn’t have.

what’s your stress levels like ?

Some very wise words spoken above. But it's not me not wanting to spend my money its my pals.

I will tell them to go away in jerky movements and start having a spend up as soon as i see something i want.

Once again thank you all for some good advice 👍.

I’d suggest that it’s the green eyed monster of envy of not wanting to see you spend your money and enjoy what you want to spend it on whereas others maybe not be in the same position to be able to do so….

  17. Seen and heard all of the above along the way over the years and no doubt will continue to do so over the years to come,  I retired last year at 63 and on announcing it to colleagues etc. was informed by several as to how “ Lucky” I was ??? and how much money I must have been on over the years etc. etc.

nothing to do with the fact that I’d paid in to various pension schemes whenever the opportunity arose and having gone without that cash over the course of a lifetimes work, well at least since being 18 years old.

you makes your own “Luck” and your own plans along with your own choices, it’s all about balance, I don’t think there’s a week goes by without me spending yet more on the sport….. really need to look a moving some of the guns on now though as far too many to make real Use of.

enjoy what you do as this is not a test run
