  1. I've recently applied for my firearms cert, I've put in for FAC air .22, .22lr and 17 hmr, I have 7 acres of land which I own myself as well as my other permissions, my permission has already been surveyed and given the ok for anything right upto .308, my land has never been surveyed until yesterday when we walked round it and he ok'd it for FAC air only which I thought was fair comment, now onto my question, so odds are I will get a closed certificate to start with(should I be granted one at all) and on my piece of land I can only shoot FAC air which is what he deemed safe(I would also agree with that) now say somebody with an open ticket thought it was perfectly safe to shoot say a .17hmr on there would that be allowed? Or now my land has been surveyed is FAC air the maximum calibre allowed on there from here on in... Second question if I get my ticket I've got my eye on a sako quad synthetic .22lr what would a suitable back stop be to zero the scope in on, would it go through a ton round bale? Cheers guys axeman..
  2. I've had loads of 4x4's and totally rate the swb 2.8 pajero's, they will pull a house down too!!
  3. I've got 7 acres that I own myself which I'm hopping on Thursday he will approve for FAC air, I can't see him granting any higher calibre on it, so that's why I've put in for that, I've got a 400 acre permission which is a council farm that my uncle has and that's been surveyed in 2010 and given the thumbs up for upto a .243, the land there is really flinty so that's what the .17hmr is for, then I've also got a 2000 acre permission which I've been shooting on for years which has been ok'ed for right upto a .308 that land is lovely black fen soil no flint so that's where I'll be using the .22lr, should I be deemed a suitable applicant and granted a ticket that is...
  4. I'm going through exactly the same thing at the moment marc, I've submitted my F.A.C forms and have my interview next Thursday morning, I wasn't sure which route to go down so I've put in for 3, an FAC air rifle .22 rim fire and a 17hmr, I think I'm going to go down the air rifle route should I be granted a ticket, but I've put in for the rifles as well just so it gives me some options later, the land I have permission on was surveyed in 2010 and was given the thumbs up for right upto a .243 which is handy, so just a case of waiting and seeing what unfolds for me now...
  5. They have accepted one of my refs, and are sending me a fresh set of forms for one more, so ill never know who it was unless the FAO let's it slip in my interview, and dekers let's hope mine pans out that way!
  6. It's got me stumped tho one chap owns a children's nursery in my village and the other chap has a shotgun certificate himself and has an advanced CRB check so he can work with kids, which I know for a fact because my wife signed as his referee, so what the problem is and who the problem is with your guess is as good as mine!!
  7. Well had a little phone call from suffolk police today turns out even after I specifically asked them one of my two referees is unsuitable! She wouldn't tell my why which points to something naughty or who, so I'm guessing either ref A) or ref B) has something on record they had forgotten about, bit of a ****** coz its set me back now as I've got to sort out another reference and send it all off again.... Frustrating.com
  8. Yes mate rifle and moderator, I'm in suffolk right on the Norfolk border out in the fens, I come under suffolk constabulary in Ipswich, my FAO is a guy called john clough seems like a down to earth nice chap, when I called him to tell him I was going to apply for an FAC air rifle permit he was the one who told me to bung the rifles on there as well..
  9. Oh right gotcha I thought a mentoring condition meant every time you went out they had to come with you for a period of time, now you've explained it that's fine I'm all up for that, I've got several people I could ask to do that no worrys, my application is in the post now so it will all take its course.. Cheers for all the info by the way chaps
  10. I hope they don't stick a mentor condition on me, I'd sooner forget the whole thing I think, if I've got to go phoning around every time I want to go shooting that's gonna get old real quick, ill just stick with the shottie if it comes to that, guess time will tell...hum ho
  11. Yeah but you was saying they would most lightly put a "mentor" restriction on a 243, well although the guy who owns the land could go down as a mentor he has absolutely no interest in shooting anymore, hence why I'm left to my own devices, and I would imagine he ain't gonna be keen to sit there watching me shoot when he can be busy with the farm, plus I highly doubt I'd ever commit to buying one even if I had the option...
  12. So here it is I scrubbed the 243 off the application, in reality I'm never going to want anything no where near that big, I've put in for FAC air rifle, .22LR and .17HMR, references all sorted, photos done and signed, everything's ready to put in the post first thing, wish me luck!
  13. I was told by my neighbour who's into his guns to stick 17hmr on the application as well, he says it will shoot flatter than the 22 and less chance of ricochet, should i choose to get one at a later date, should i even be granted a ticket that is!! is that correct and good advice or not?
  14. To be honest I have absolutely no intention of getting a rifle what so ever, the FAO advised me to put in for them so there was options on my ticket should I decide later on I wanted one to save reapplying, all I'm going to do is wind up my air rifle and that's it...
  15. Well I took your advice boys my paperwork is all filled out, just gotta get me photos done and signed by my referees and I'm throwing my hat in the FAC ring, turns out the 2500 acres I've got permission on is cleared for right upto a 308, so I've put in for FAC air rifle .22 rim fire and a 243 for shooting foxes and muntjac, just gotta stand back and see what happens now I guess, I only wanted the FAC air but thought I'd try my luck at getting a couple of rifles on there In case I want one at a later date...
  16. Mk70 grade 5 12 gauge, oil finished stock, I was just curious what you chaps use to shine the stock up, so walnut oil seems to be the winner, I currently give the stock a wipe over with a polish called wood silk but ill see if I can get my hands on some walnut oil instead...
  17. They probably didn't look at your situation in much detail, I'd guess as he skimmed over your application he's just seen the words "unemployed" and "history of mental illness" and that was enough for him how he was feeling on that day at that particular time to refuse your application, if your lucky after he looks at your situation in a bit more detail he may change his mind, and if he doesn't there are some great air rifes on the market...
  18. Ok cheers lads all food for thought..
  19. The farmer who owns the land shoots muntjac and roe deer when he can be bothered and has quite an extensive rifle collection so the land has been given the thumbs up at some point, but he's old now and really can't be ***** with shooting at all to be honest, plus luckily for me he is a paranoid ol ****** his boys all ****** off to london, and there's only a handful of us he lets shoot on his land, that's only because he knows our fathers, and I just fancied cranking the air rifle up a knotch so I can whack a few bunnies from a bit further away, so just to clarify even if I did get an open ticket with this amount of land to shoot on, with an fac can you only ever shoot on approved land then? Or is it then upto the individual to make the call when and where once there granted an open ticket?
  20. Hi paul thanks for the reply, So what your saying is unless i was one of the very lucky few, if i was to apply and be granted a licence it won't be down to my discretion where I shoot the gun it would have to be on only pre approved land? Because I've got a 2500 acre permission and there's just no way I'm gonna take the plod all over that, ill just give the whole thing a miss I think...
  21. Hi guys I'm sure this has been asked before but maybe you'd be kind enough to humour me, I'd like to have my air rifle possibly cranked up in power above the 12Lb limit, now I know I'd need to be granted a firearms licence first, now all I want it for is my air rifle I'm not interested in getting a full blown rifle at this point in time, so what's the process? And if I was to be granted a licence for air rifle use is it the same as a full blown rifle and until I've got an open ticket I can only shoot it on land pre approved by the police or is it down to my discretion? This probably holds no bearing but just for your info I've held a shotgun certificate for over 10 years now, thanks for your time guys...
  22. what do you chaps use on the wood on your guns if anything? I use napier on the metal and currently give the stock a squirt of some stuff called woodsilk which is just a general wood polish, so just out of curiosity what do you use?
  23. Ive had an s410 and hw100, there both top notch guns and I cant fault either, the only thing I can say from my experience is id say the hw100 slightly had the edge with build quality, and personally the weight was never an issue for me, I guess if you wanted to be really critical they are slightly heaver than other guns but when your spending that kind of money you want a bit of meat in your hands don't you, that's my ten penith worth anyway... hw100
