  1. I have just come home after a very enjoyable afternoon with friends busting a few clays at the Purbeck Shooting School in Wareham Forest. Can someone please advise me on point of protocol? One of the stands is a high tower where a couple of the traps launch clays straight over the cage at about 40 yards height. Most of my pals stood facing towards the trap and took the clays coming straight towards them or straight above. I decided to try something different. I stood sideways on and took the clays as high 'crossers'. My gun was never pointed in any different direction to my pals - it was just sideways on, and still safely within the limits of the cage. Although most of my friends thought this perfectly legitimate, one of them raised a query about whether this was allowed, especially if it had been a pukka competition. Can anyone tell me if there is any rule against taking such birds sideways on? Much obliged. Badsworth
  2. Does anyone know the identity of any dealers who trade in Section 5 firearms? I am after a self loading pistol. I believe there is (or used to be) a dealer in Leeds who has a range of weapons for export or sale to those who have permission (including humane despatch). I would be very grateful for any info. Thanks Badsworth
  3. Add me to the list too please Tommy! Badsworth
  4. Geoffrey Davies of 'Nightvision Suppliers' (Used to be called 'Nightvision Supplies') is offering a digital add-on for £399 based on the Newton Hornet digital monocular. The price is very attractive and the only review I have found is very favourable - see http://www.riflesunl...icle.php?id=30. I have read several very positive comments about Geoffrey by users of this forum and he does seem a very decent guy. Does anyone have any experience of using this digital add on intensifier? Or any other knowledge that will help me make up my mind about this piece of kit? I know that £399 is peanuts as far as Nightvision equipment goes, but it is still a significant outlay. Can anyone help? Thanks Badsworth
  5. Thanks for the replies folks - and for pointing me to this link; http://www.airgunbbs...highlight=gavin Sadly it seems that GB Sights is no more! B
  6. I am considering the Merlin, and it does have some good points (one of which is that the company is well established and I could get repairs/problems resolved), but it is not a digital sight and suffers from all the fragility/tube life issues that affect traditional NV scopes. I haven't dismissed it though! B
  7. Unfortunately I cannot search for the previous topic - as 'GB' is only 2 letters the search engine won't allow me to search for 'GB Sights' so I am a bit stuck. B
  8. Does anyone know what happened to GB Sights? They used to sell a very promising digital add-on Night Vision Scope that looked like a winner. Now that I have the money I went to their web page - www.gbsights.co.uk to find that it has gone. Perhaps someone on the forum knows if they have changed the company name or website? What about anyone who has bought one of their products and needs support? Please let us know. Badsworth
  9. Can anyone offer any suggestions for locations from which to VIEW (only) the Red Deer rut on Exmoor this Sept/Oct? I am going to be staying for a few days and my wife has asked if we can find a location to view the RD during the rut (probably influenced by 'Autumnwatch'). I don't have any permissions there so will not be taking my rifle but I do want to encourage her interest. Can anyone help please? Specific locations if possible because I don't know the area. Badsworth
  10. I stalk in Dorset, and I have seen no signs of the Roe Rut yet (surprisingly). Perhaps it is something to do with the weather? Anyone got any ideas? It is usually well under way by now. B
  11. I use them regularly for weekend shoots with pals. They are good for the price but I wouldn't use them in a competition. They are also the dirtiest cartridges I have ever used - you wouldn't believe the cloud of clag that comes out when you fire them (I use fibre wad). B
  12. I think there will be one very happy farmer (and keeper) this morning. You are going to be very welcome there in future. B
  13. Lots of good info is coming in folks - thankyou. I've got the message that it is 28 days max - but keep the other feedback coming please. I am Risk assessment trained so I could do that - but I am keen to hear all the advice that you have to offer. B
  14. A bunch of friends and I occassionally have a clay shoot on a local farm. We shoot a few days during the year. One of the locals has said that if we want to keep doing this regularly we will need to get planning permission for holding a clay shoot. Does anyone know how many days we can shoot before we need planning permission? Is it the same everywhere, or is it a matter for the local council/planning authority to decide? What are the implications of going down this road? Would the Police get involved? Would we need insurance, risk asessments etc? Anything else? Thanks folks - I know soeone on here will have the answers. Badsworth.
  15. This gun was inspected by our (Dorset) FEO on Tuesday as partof my routine renewal - he was happy! B
  16. I have had a number of enquiries about this gun, so here are some more photographs. I have had specific questions about what it is proofed for. The dealer I bought it from ('Gillie' Howes, of 'Modern and Antique Fireams') said it was for two, and two and half inch cartridges. I know that Eley Fourlong fit and can be fired successfully . I have fired a handful through it. However, I have received a comment from a contributor on one of the gun sites that these kinds of guns are only proofed for 2" carts. I am afraid I don't know enough about proof marks to tell, so I am attaching photographs of the proof-marks so that some learned bod on this site can offer an opinion. Until and unless someone can offer better advice I am offering this gun as being suitable for 2" cartridges. I am also attaching some pictures of the woodwork and colour hardening. The item on the end of the barrel is an extension - carried out by 'Gillie' Howes. Many guns of this type have barrels only 23" long and are therefore Section 1 Firearms (though many owners don't realise this until an enthusiastic young copper gets out the tape-measure!). So as not to overload this site with big picture files I am also providing some links to other pictures stored on 'Photobucket'. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0008.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0009.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0010.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0011.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0012.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0013.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0014.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0015.jpg http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a72/badsw...un/DSC_0006.jpg
  17. I will post something about the proof marks later. It won't take 3" cartirdges but will work fine with Eley 'Fourlong'. Eley 'Fourlong' say on the box that they are two and a half inch - but actually if you measure them they are two and a quarter. I have never tried any other two and a half inch cartridges. I am getting a lot of interest in the gun so I will be putting on some more pictures later. At the moment I am taking my son (now 16) for his first part time job interview. B
  18. A really exceptional example of this lovely little Belgian 'Poachers Gun'. 24" octagonal to round Barrel. Colour Hardening to action. Good woodwork and excellent bore. Probably 3/4 or full choke. Exact age unknown - but this kind of folding gun was popular from around 1895 to 1950. Bought three years ago from 'Modern and Antique Firearms' of Tuckton, Bournemouth for my 13 year old son. It is as light as a feather and has virtually no re-coil. Shoots beautifully, though it has had very few rounds through it. An ideal starter or ladies gun, but also a nice collector's piece. It is the best example of one of these you are ever likely to find. Usual SGC rules apply. £200.00.
  19. I have just aquired a load of .25-06 cases. They are marked 'W-W 25-06' . Can anyone tell me what this means please? Is it Winchester brass, or something else? Many thanks Badsworth
  20. Thanks Guys - I am saved. I expect he will want a 30mm one as well now! B
  21. My boy (15) has decided that he wants a .50 cal case or dummy round for Xmas (amongst much other stuff). Has anyone any idea where I can buy one? Badsworth
  22. Tikkamark - I see that you say you only spray with WD40 'in damp conditions' - that isn't exactly what JR recommend. They say a spray after EVERY outing - whether or not the weapon has been fired. T8s are very prone to the rust monster - you need to be pretty anal about caring for them. Unless your zero is screwed by taking it off (some say it is on their rifle) - remove it after every outing, give it a blow through (your mouth will do) to remove all the corrosive gases, then spray with WD40 or Napier (or similar). Some of it will evapoorate, but your first shot after will produce a visible signature (a plume of vapour). Your mod will last longer - but sadly not for ever. There are longer lasting mods on the market, but usually at a cost. I've got one - not my best buy but cheap in comparison to the competition. Good luck Badsworth
  23. Has anyone tried re-loading Prvi Partisan cases? Is the brass of reasonable quality? I have a .25-06 on order (don't get me going about importing SAKO's) and the cost of 100 complete rounds is only about 25% more than buying 100 Remington once fired cases. I am tempted to give them a try when my Remington cases are worn out. Can anyone offer any advice please? B
