Hi lads has anyone ever seen a white headed sparrow I have checked on internet they are saying crested but this one is nothing like they are showing me I have tried taking photos but he doesn’t keep still I think he/she is camera shy

Probably a Leucistic headed House Sparrow.

Can occur as a genetic form, (unable to lay down melanin or pigment for feather colour).

    Question 1.

I feed a number of flighting ponds. Two work very well as evening flighting ponds but the third seems to be a day pond holding 100+ ducks by day and all gone by dusk.

I am considering putting a timed automatic feeder on the pond to only feed at night to try and change this pattern. Am I being unrealistic?

    Question 2.

When feeding I have always put the feed into the shallows and/or just on the bank. I shot a friend's pond last season who had a normal barrel feeder with a pan/tray type outlet on the bottom. The feeder was sited on the bank probably 2-3m from the water. The flight was successful so this seems to work. Has anyone any experience and pros/cons of using this method?

    Many thanks, GBS

Have used 45 gallon drums with letter box openings x3 in the sides, about 3" from the bottom, on a couple of concrete blocks, we fed barley and wheat, they worked well.    Placed them about 6 feet from the edge, on a bank that gave easy access, and return to water.

  3. Spotted an Albino/pure white Swallow today amongst a group of ten or so 'normal' swallows.

A first for me, and brilliant to watch it hawking insects with its fellow Swallows.

Have seen Albino's/white birds in Pheasant, Blackbird, Woodpigeon, Jackdaw, Magpie and also pied birds in Carrion Crow and Starling but todays sighting was by far the best as regards unusuality.

This fella is causing quite a stir locally!

I haven't seen it and spent some time looking this evening along side some birders who travelled 6hrs to try and get a glimpse. Only the third recording in Ireland apparently. Can anyone put a name to it? I had never even heard of it before yesterday.

It's a Collared Pratincole, a scarce summer vagrant from Southern Europe and North Africa.

I saw a White Stork recently, in the valley of the River Ver, near Redbourn, Herts.

Only one on it's own, I recognised it soon enough as I've seen a few pairs on stubble fields alongside the motorway between Boulogne and Calais.

Apparently they're rare in the UK?

    Cat. 😎

Have a look at the website 'The White Stork project'

plenty of info there, but to see one like you did is great.

    All the best.

  6. Two adult Cuckoo's satellite tagged in May over in Ireland, have started their ' Autumn ' migration south.

This is the first year Irish Cuckoo's have been tagged (BTO project, four Cuckoos tagged), to determine their migration route.

A Great Bustard, probably one of the re-introduced birds from Salisbury plain initiative of  2004, 20 birds were released from Russian source.

See The Great Bustard Group online, for more information.

You could be right, the bird looked to me to be landing on the tree stump but could be a lot closer to the camera, which would make it smaller than I first thought and possibly a female redstart.

Yeah another Redstart, there is no way that the other Redstart ( The Male ), would be sat on that post ,if that was a BOP coming in to the scene.

Yesterday I saw a bird flying near my house which I couldn't identify. If was the size of a crow, had a longish tail and was grey in colour.

The closest bird to it would be a male Hen Harrier but it wasn't one of those.

    Any suggestions?

    Cuckoo ?

Not suggesting what you do, but I'll be voting reform which is a huge brake from the norm, that is neither a looney woke party like the greens on the left, or on the extreme right.

Reform, or other parties like them, would not need to ever take power, all that would need happen is them to make enough gains to force the cons, or even Labour realise that unless they start giving the voters what they actually want, they will lose their grip on the voting public.

    Reform for me too.

  11. Used to attend meets up on the Cotswolds many moons ago, a time when I owned racing Greyhounds as well.

Most Hares escaped through portholes built into the cotswold stone walls,

This was all under Coursing club rules, and a good spectacle, I would say most Hares escaped, they knew the ground better than their persuers.

That amount of money take advice. Not just a matter of interest but how long you want it tied up for.

Good advice, ( to take advice).

Nationwide currently have  1 or 2 year ISA's at 4.10% and 4.30% ,(max £20,000) or 1 year fixed rate bonds at 4.10%, (unlimited deposit, no withdrawals ).

Is this the brexiteers being weeded out??

Nigel Farage said on his show last night (GBNews), there are now 21 remainers, and only 8 brexiteers left in the top Tory posts.
