  2. get yourself a good book and then get yourself an expert! This is not an area to dip in to lightly. The problem is that you see all of this free food which looks very tempting and feel there has got to be an easy way of getting it right. However, all of the groups that are good to eat seem to have a rogue in the pack that can do you some harm, and sometimes serious harm. I've spent the last couple of autumns looking for just boletus mushrooms. These have a spongy underside rather than gills and are good to eat. However, while the group contains such names as "penny buns", obviously edible and look like - you guessed it, the group also contains the Devil's boletus - again, appropriately named. Some mushrooms are immediately unpleasant to eat. Some cause stomach upsets, sweating etc. Some even allow you to think you have got over the problem while they are steadily shutting down your liver and kidneys. For what it's worth I've taken the following approach. I want to know what they are all called when I see them on walks - good book with common names will tell you most. I want to eat some - I've settled on 2-3 types and will only collect them when I'm sure (giant puffballs being the easy one to be sure about!) I've found a couple of places where I know I can go back to and find the same thing. I use an expert. Either get in touch with your local fungi group - they love to help, or I've used the River Cottage chap from the wildfood.net website. And at the end of the day, wild mushrooms are good but they ain't so good that you would want to risk getting it wrong.
