  1. You what? A self employed friend of mine recently complained about the 11 quid stamp he pays every week or month, forget the details, when I told him I pay considerably more than that every day he said at least I get sick pay...

Yes but yet again, thats not the full story. The self employed pay two lots of NI. One is fixed at £10 or £11 per month, and the second is calculated as a percentage of profits. It is around 4% cheaper in NI to be self employed, but no sick pay, redundancy, maternity etc etc

  2. I (still) earn less than £30k and pay more than £6k in tax and NI.

My mate in the building trade earnt over £50k last year. Paid his accountant just under £1400 and didn't pay a penny in tax.

I'd love to be able to self cert on all my earnings and have the perks of the private sector.

Income tax is the same for PAYE or self employed, but NI is slightly more for PAYE people. Your mate is either not telling you the full story, or is committing tax fraud. If he made a profit of £50k, he would pay exactly the same amount as someone on PAYE with a salary/bonus of £50k.

Very few people earning less than £30k are able to save enough money over their working life to buy themselves a pension at the level you will receive, even if you do have to work until you are 60.

  3. I'm looking at trying to hit predarors on the pheasant shoot with some traps this year. Are fenn traps the way to go for the smaller predator? I've seen the mk4 and mk6 and wondered what the differance was? Also are there any good traps people would reccomend for flying predators? Are cage traps for foxes very successful? we normally shoot them but just like the idea of a 24/7 solution.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers

The MK4's are for squirrels, rats, stoats etc. The MK6 is larger and suitable for mink, rabbits etc. For magpies and crows you need a larsen trap, or if it's just crows you are after a ladder trap may be better.

  4. iuse a wild bird table top mix with aniseed in it i have done for about 7 years its a lot cheaper and just as good

    Hi Larp

How much do you pay for the wild bird mix, if you don't mind me asking? Where do you get it from, and how do you feed it to your birds?

Does it make much difference, or would I be better off spinning plain wheat?

  5. This has answered some of my questions too.. I am in the market for one, needs to be 4x4 due to the areas it will be used and can spend up to £1,500 but where do I look? On Autotrader they all seem to be silly money!?

Also, how much is a decent trailer going to set me back and again, where from??

There are always lots on ebay

  6. hi guys and girls, im looking at getting a quad for carrying my pigeon gear+for lamping, dont no much about them and not sure witch one to get, i have a buget of 600, been looking at a honda trx 200 are they any good!!! would i need a 4x4 or would a 2x2 be up to it cheers (what do you have) :good:

In my opinion, Honda make the best quality quads. My father in law has a trx200 and that would be fine carrying gear and lamping. You may need a 4x4 if your ground is particularly wet or steep though.

  7. Hmm maybe more awkward than first thought. Is there any problems with just having a walk around and getting a few flying ones ? I basically have free run on the farm so can go from field to field if need be as they are everywhere. or is it worth going with the air rifle to there roosting spot ?

You might get the odd one by walking around, but their eyesight is so good it wont be easy. If you have access to the roosting woods, get there just before dark and catch them flighting in with a shotgun. It's normally just about dark before they roost so no need to worry too much about a hide.

  8. Just picked up my .222. What would be a sensible zero range? The seller was very vague. I think someone set it up for him and he didn't use it much. I'm shooting foxes and long range rabbits. Having ranged my ground I reckon most shots will be 150 to 250, occasionlly 300 yards. I'm thinking 170 yd zero shot half inch high at 100. How does that sound?

What zero range/load combination do people use?

The rifle has a 24" barrel and I'm told a 1:8 twist, so I'm hoping it will handle a good range of loads.

I did search this but I got bored after the second page of unrelated topics, so apologies if this is old hat.

I have a 223, which is very similar. I set it to be 1" high at 100yds, which is about 185yd zero, and about 3" low at 250yds. This is with a 50grn bullet.

I would be surprised if your rifle has a 1:8 twist, I think it is more likely to be 1:12 especially if its a factory barrel.

  9. Hi guys, I'm rather new to the black stuff, so what's the best way about getting the numbers down quick so the farmer can see im doing my bit, this is a new permission and will be a very good 1 for me as it's on my doorstep, so I'm eager to please and do a good job ? Is it worth decoying ? As all I have are pigeon decoys, I have a rotary Which has dead bird cradles. And could put some tights over the pigeon deeks. I presume 32 6's will be ok ? I have 2 guns with fixed chokes one at 1/4 and 1/2 the other at 3/4 and full, which would be the best to take ? I shoot just as bad with both guns. Any help is great and even a day out could be a possibility depending on what the farmer says.

Find out where they are feeding, get there early in the morning and put out a few decoys, make sure you have a really good hide or they will spot you instantly. Add to the decoys with dead birds as you shoot them. I have managed to shoot some reasonable bags this way. Try dead birds on the rotary, as this sometimes works. Flappers with a dead bird on work well and having a decent crow call helps as well. I would say 32g 6's through 1/4 & 1/2 chokes would be absolutely fine.

  10. It did cross my mind it replaced the 22 hornet didn't it...and then was replaced itself by the 223 yes?

I know the hornet is pretty dated to isn't it

    Cheers

I would go for the Hornet, 222, or 223. A safe shot is a safe shot, regardless of the calibre or the size of the land

  11. I have one in Crow, and one in Dove (They didn't have pigeon from the States), and use them in combination with flappers and a 4 arm magnet. They are excellent, but use AA batteries (Although could probably be converted for lead acid, or just drop some rechargable AA's in).All in all a great product, and they come with their own carrying bag too :good:

Is the crow version any good?

  12. Just had a letter from my friendly (not) tax man telling me that my new code for next year is 26L which means that I can earn £5 per week before paying tax.

    WELL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There must be a reason for that code, they should have sent you a calculation with the coding notice. It will be becasuse they are taxing you on a company car, employment benefits, untaxed income, or collecting underpaid tax for earlier years etc etc.

You should check their figures carefully and if its not right, which is not uncommon, tell HMRC and they should change it for you.

  13. Havnt done mine as I did not recieve a UTR number when i went self employed.

Just rung HMRC up and they cannot give it out via phone so are sending it. Asked if it would be here Tuesday and answer was no probably Thursday!

Looks like a £100 fine then a late payment fee...

It would be worth arguing over the £100 fine, especially if its their fault you haven't got a UTR. As long as you pay your tax before the end of February, you won't get a late payment penalty, just some interest.
