dont have a pic of the exit wound and they wouldnt let me take a pic of the xrays. ive seen the xray and you wouldnt believe how many pieces a vmax round breaks up into but then it had already started its expansion goin through the welly boot so that might explain this. ive got a box of chocs here for the nurses il try persuade them one more time before i go.

thanks for the nice comments guys. like i said before this thread was not put up for sympathy purposes but for making us all alot more aware that no matter how careful you think you are being an accident can still happen. for those asking on how i actually got my foot in the way i cannot tell you for sure. i know the ground was at a slight incline but i cannot say for sure thats what made the difference. ive been through every detail in my head so many times and i just cant add up how i got my foot in the way. on a better note im getting out of hospital all patched up tonight so thats cheered me up a little. be safe guys

to be honest when i got the welly off i expected worse guys. the importance of this thread was for me to show how accidents still happen when you think you are being cautious. ive learned the hard way and have swallowed my pride to put this thread up in the hope that we can all learn a lesson as to how easy something can happen when we least expect it.

definately got full expansion of the bullet. i must see if i can get a pic of the xray before i leave. very impressive. yeah it hurts like mad. yes there was alot of damage to bone, muscle and skin but the doctor is confident that it will heal up now they have operated on it twice.

any of you know how to resize pictures as it says they are too large to post.

old bill have the rifle at the minute. i have a reference number and have to phone them when i get home. they took a statement and were happy enough it was an accident. i have pics and il put them up when i get home also. i wouldnt class pointing the gun at your foot as safe either but if your are goin to make mistake and misfire **** law says thats were its goin to be.

very embarrassing topic for me here guys. i shot myself in the foot on sunday 29/11/11 with a 17hmr rifle and have been in hospital ever since. i realise that im probably not the only one ever to have done this or worse but im sure not everybody would be as willing to tell the tale afterwards. i want to tell you my story to see if we can figure out where i went wrong although i have a fair idea of my own. on saturday 28/11/11 i went to bed around 10 oclock and set my alarm for 3 oclock. i got up and got my gear on, packed the car and set off to my mates house to go lamping. the reason for this is we had never tried early in the morning before and we were curious to see if there was any difference. any hoo, we set about our session and discovered that no there was no difference in the times (well not for rabbits anyway) both equally effective. by 7 oclock in the morning nearing dawn we decided to call it a day. this is were it gets gorey!!! when im carrying my gun when lamping i normally have my clip in my pocket, bolt in the gun, and gun over my shoulder on a sling . when im finished lamping its the same only il have the bolt in my pocket also. when i unload the gun its always the same procedure too il take safety off, pull bolt back catching the ejected round, lift the clip out and then pull the bolt right back and press the trigger to release it all while pointing the gun at the ground. so why this time did i shoot myself in the foot while doing a proceedure that i have done so many times before. after alot of head scatching myself and the doctor at the hospital have come to this conclusion. although i didnt feel tired that morning we think i was mentally tired causing me to muddle up the proceedure that really does become second nature to you of unloading the gun. unfortunately i cant confirm this as in the comotion and shock of this all i just cant be 100 percent sure no matter how many times i go over it in my head although it is the best explaination we can think of. he went on to mention that most acidents happen through tiredness and fatigue, for example a high percentage of car accidents will happen first thing in the morning when you think your body is working fine but your mind is still on autopilot. your thoughts would be greatly appreciated on this one guys. sorry for all the small print, im using one hand as i have a drip in the other.

My cut off point is when I start yawning I loose interest and there is only one thing on my mind and it's not shooting but a nice warm bed. I stay up all night sea fishing but find I can make mistakes casting and miss bites etc so on that basis once I get too tired its time to put the gun away.

Afraid of buying second hand.
geordiepigeon replied to deputy dog's topic in General Shooting Matters
I think the same as you. I tend to buy everything brand new apart from cars. When I buy something I buy it to keep. Il never part with it unless there is something wrong with it. Id also be scared of being shafted with a crappy secondhand rifle that was shot out. And for those reasons I would go new. That's not to say there aren't good secondhand deals out there that are totally genuine but for that extra peace of mind I'd go new. It's just the way I am and probably always will be. -
You goin into a hole new can of worms for me now. Il bow out and watch the responses. Sounds like fun tho. I watched that robson green fella carp fishing in the Everglades somewhere with a bow and a fishing reel attached to it. They were doing it at night with a lamp as the Carp come to the surface then. Looked like fun!

I'm not sure if your feo is the person to report it to as most of ours are civilians. If you were to report to your local plod as an incident you witnessed and believed to be suspicious it would go on file and probably not be followed up until some substantial evidence was reported. I think in your case to keep yourself right in future it is best not to confront them but to gather information from a safe distance and letting your police deal with it. I see it as a duty to treat a shooting permission as you would if it were your own land. The fact that they hid ment they knew they were in the wrong. If you didn't report it as a result sometime livestock was shot you would be investigated too. A busy farmer could then decide that letting people shoot his land isn't worth the hassle.

I looked into it a while back and while you don't need a licence to have one I think the other posts above are true about hunting with one in the uk. There are some serious pieces of kit on the Market. Bowtech make one called the striker that can fire a 36 grain bolt through the chronograph at 405 fps. Also ppe make one called the tac 15 with 415 fps. That's scary quick for a projectile that large. The Americans use them alot for turkey and boar. If you type the bow names I mentioned above into YouTube you will be able to watch people using them, demonstrations and hunting etc. Ofcoarse these bows don't come cheap and are high maintenance with the strings and pulleys to keep them high power and accurate. As far as finding the bolts again after firing you can get LED ends for the bolts for hopefully regaining after a shot. Ofcoarse the bolts aren't cheap either. There are some lethal arrow heads also that would slice you up real good and some real ingenious inventions that work just like a ballistic round and again you guessed it they are expensive too. On down the range a bit you have the Barnett crossbows and in the mid range Parker would be the best. Check out some of the websites online. I just found them searching through google. Spent hours looking and watching vids one night before deciding not to take the sport up. Was very interesting tho.
