I own both. I'd recommend that to anyone. However the choice depends on what you expect the gun to do. For hunting a multi shot pcp wins hands down every time in my experience. Its easier to shoot and offers the multi shot capability which is for me has put more game down. I've lost opportunities whilst reloading my TX. Having said this the TX is more fun to shoot. Its a good looking gun and if your first priority is not game in the bag then Id go for a springer. Though in truth you will very likely end up buying a pcp later for hunting like I did.

Thanks for all the info everyone. And thank you Tony. You did make some valuable points that no doubt stem from experiance. A breeder of HWV explained it this way. In England, a man who kept dogs for shooting was (historically) generally wealthy and kept a specific breed for each situation encountered on mostly formal shoots. In East Europe however the peasants could only afford one dog who had to earn his keep. They were ruthless in pursuing this breed and today after many generations of breeding now have very versatile dogs that are truly capable. These dogs are relatively new to us in the UK. This makes sense. I've got a bit more thinking to do and some reading too. Thanks again for the input and I'll keep you in the loop. Dan

Hi Im looking at a first gundog. I want it to be suitable for pigeon shooting i.e. from a hide and wild fowling too should I get involved more with that. I'm stuck a bit. I really like the Hungarian wire haired vizsla which is, I admit something different but I've heard many good things about them. The other dog I like is the springer spaniel. I like labs but just don't fancy one. Nothing at all against them but they are not on my list right now. Can any of you more experienced dog handlers give me any advice here on what direction I should take. I have 3 kids (12,9,5) wife who is at home during the day and we are all keen. Can Springers make good retrieving dogs? Any feedback is appreciated. Dan

Ok that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up. He told me the chokes were set at half and and quarter. I saw this on the barrel this evening and thought my ignorance had been exploited!

Picked up a new gun today which I'm well chuffed with. Its a Beretta S686 special. Question. On the barrels it says 12GA.2 3/4"-28" Its a fixed choke but can anyone confirm the size of the chokes? Does this mean its got 2 x 3/4inch chokes? When I figure out how to compress the pictures I'll put a few up. Dan

As the title suggests I shoot a field of rape. A large flock is hammering the middle of the field. Whats the experts thoughts on setting up shop in the centre of a field? Will it spook the birds etc? D

Hi Guys. I'm looking for a hand putting some pigeon on the deck on some winter rape right now. I've got a couple of perms. hi mate I'm in Oxfordshire. He's keen on me shooting over the rape. Why? I don't know really The perm contains woodland and some recently ploughed feilds. Also some of the fields are huge. I didn't see many birds on the ground on my initial walk at about 12:30 in the day. Its knowing how to interpret what I'm seeing with a view to successful shooting where I struggle.

Further to my recent post about a new perm... I'm going to treat myself. I love air rifles and kinda fancy an HW100K. Though at 1 Gee for a good rig cheap they are not.. Do you guys consider a sub 12 air rifle to be an effective tool for decoying/roost shooting or do you think the money would be better spent on a nice 12bore? Dan

Hi people! I'm pretty new to taking my shooting seriously. Been shooting on and off for years but consider myself a complete newbie having only bluffed my way along up until now with only (very limited) opportunistic "success" under my belt. I've just acquired a lovely new permission which I'm really chuffed about. The farmer is keen and is pointing me towards his rape but by his own admission knows little about shooting and strategy. I'm thinking how best to approach this new perm or in other words what you old hands do in the first few months of getting new permisions. Obviously recon and observing flight lines but even then the farm is huge and somewhat daunting if i'm honest!
