  1. Kent; harness = pulling, collar/slip lead = loose leash walking. My dogs are intelligent and I don't insult their ability to differentiate between those two and the words "With me" and "Hike"

Red - you bet! I'm in bright pink too so you can't miss me!

Thanks for the wishes, I had a brief chat with him online this morning. :)

  2. A bit of both. I had a go with a friends pointer and I couldn't keep my pedalling up with him. On flats I let them pull but on muddy bits or up hills I pedal.

And yes - I have a cold and chesty cough at the moment.

  3. Hey guys,

Not been posting much. The OH set off back to camp Tuesday evening and he will be shipping off to Afghanistan Tomorrow. We've been manic making sure everyone has seen him before he goes - his brothers wedding.

And I've been getting into a new sport with the dogs.

This is a video of the pupper and Jack running - the sport is called Bikejoring. It is the only thing I can do that doesn't clash with the commands of gundog training.

It's also a quicker way of exercising them before I go to work.

Next week we will be ramping the gundog stuff up as Pen is going to Catton Hall Game fair. Hoping to enter her into some of the comps - however she's still a little green due to my lack of training - yes I know I am beating myself up for not keeping on top of the gundog stuff with her.

Lou after out go out on the bike went for a drink in the lake and sliced his paw so he's out of action for a while. :(

    Anyway I trust you're all well :)

  4. Can you do this with any meat? I have a load of pigeons, pheasants, duck in the freezer.

    Lee

I suppose you could. I know of people who have put whole sprats in, pigs skin..

Here's the thread from the forum where I found out about it. There are loads of ideas once you get through everyones post. But I will say - if you are doing it for human consumption - cook the meat first, cool then put in the dehydrator, unless you like raw meat..

  5. You should package that up and sell it to Tesco as beef jerkey.

I was thinking of making it a small business but can't be doing with taxes and licencing etc..

I do have some beef strips doing at the moment actually  The dogs woke me up stupidly early and I thought they really needed the toilet - but their noses went straight to where the dehydrator is.

  6. I'd imagine my liver and kidneys are in a similar condition following the weekend I've had.

Ouch! Bet it was fun though

Watch the Offal tiny amounts are ok but just a little too much and they get squirty. Most gundog trainers are not keen on treats but I like them for teaching an odd thing or two initially, quickly moving away from them.

Mine don't get much offal in their meals - they get one meal of offal a week so these are great. However I took Lou out yesterday with the Turkey Thigh and he's never worked for something so much. So I'll definitely be dehydrated whole meats more now.

  7. I've been busy dehydrating a range of things for the dogs and my small furries - I've saved a fortune on dog treats and since Louie seems to have a grain intolerance my dehydrator has become a life saver on treats.

  8. Oh my lord! Have a rolled up newspaper handy!! He's a frigging puppy!

There are two ways to handle resource guarding.

    1 - hand feed.

2 - leave the dog alone.

The first method you start by giving him his food in your hand - don't look at him or attempt to touch him do this for a week or so then say "Good boy" extend your vowels when doing so it's soothing and rewarding. Then gently stroke the dogs head - if he grumbles - you've moved on too quick. Continue on until you can then put the food in his bowl. Only put little bits in his bowl at a time and when he's done with that bit, walk past again and drop some more in. He will then look to you as a good thing - you bring more food!

More on this method here: http://ahimsadogtrai...ource-guarding/

The second one - get a crate and feed him in there. That way - he has somewhere to eat in peace and no one gets bitten or hurt. But I'd only use this method with an older dog - try the first one since he's only 20 weeks - following the writing on the blog he should be fine within weeks :)

ETA: Just realised I said more or less the same as Siberian Tiger.. :)

  9. Did he hit any of the dogs with his whip? So why would it be more impressive.Do you train your dogs with no boots on so you can't kick them.I often carry a stick when i am training my dogs doesn't mean i use it on my dogs but if any of mine were attacked by another dog i would use it then

    Geordie

Where did I say he hit them?

I don't kick my dogs. I don't use a stick, they might get the odd leash pull - but other than that - everything is positive.

Him swinging it around - they must have all been hit with it at some point. Not quite as many but I can stop all 5 of mine before they eat AND direct them to their bowls. Without using anything but voice and hand signals. If he'd had done the same - I would've been more impressed.

  10. I'd happily take her on if I didn't have Jack (foster). The thing is - take her off the rubbish food, put her on some decent quality stuff. Give her some exercise (I'd do hydrotherapy to build the muscles first) then cycling etc and everytime she barks outside the house - straight back home. If she was dog aggressive she'd be the same as Benjie. Benjie gave up the barking out of the house within a week of me just taking him home again. And teaching him to speak and be quiet on command.

They can be homed together or separate. So if you know of anyone looking for a pet dog or a challenge then please let me know. Would rather see them rehomed to someone with an ounce of knowledge - especially the lab as she is un-spayed - just another breeding machine to some folk.

  11. Crossposting from elsewhere. Thought this was the best place to put this.

    Good evening friends,

I know this should go under the rescue section but I fear no one will see it there. Basically there is a Lab and Beagle looking for a new home.

I have mentioned said owner before who used to post on here but left after everyone "had a go at her" for changing her breed and buying a pup within 24 hours.

Said dogs had a very stressful walk with myself and the owner during the snow (novelty thing) and havent seen a walk since and previous to that we are talking a year without a walk or seeing anyone.

The Beagle is very friendly with dogs and people (from my own experience and what Ive seen) pulls on the lead but thats understandable from having NO walks rolleyes.gif may be fearful of hands due to "rough" treatment from current owners. She is spade and about 5 yo.

The Lab is just coming up 2 (March/May time) un spayed and has behavioural issues (again due to NO walks, about 4 in her life) taken out as a little cute puppy, then not seen the light of day since the novelty has worn off.

Always very happy to see me in her own home, jumps up a lot and mouths a lot too. When she does go for a walk, she gets so excited/aroused/worked up she barks NON stop, as soon as you step out she barks loudly and constantly and lunges and jumps clean off all 4s. She barks and lunges at people in an aroused/unsure way.

Never had a decent run/walk in her life so no surprises. She would do great with love, training and excerise. The current "reason" for her not being walked is shes too strong and pulls too much. I offered to walk her (on said snowy day) and used Dotties Canny Collar on her and harness with a training lead and I still had great trouble controlling her as she gets so aroused.

The Lab is underweight and the Beagle is overweight. Both being fed Pedigree dry.

The reason for (IMHO LONG overdue re-homing) is the dad in the household is finding out the results of an MRI scan this month and may have to have an op on his knee which means the dogs will never be walked again as "he's the only one who can control them" (through fear). Neither work and can walk when they want to so no excuses for these dogs not being walked and NO excuses for them being "rough handled" to say the least.

I was shocked to hear "Yeah I'll be sad to see them go, but its for the best, I'd love to get a Westie though!" eek.gif mad.gif

If I had to (God Forbid) rehome my 2 I would never in the same sentence then add I cant wait to get another dog though! The same people who gave one of their many cats to our local home because they couldnt afford it (old cat) but at the same time, the daughter was spending over £200+ on a bearded dragon and all the gear for it! incazzato.gif

They want them re-homed together if possible, like theyre doing them a favour! So I said in my calm polite voice Id help find them a new home instead of them going god knows where and I'd love to see them re-homed together as the only company they've known is each other.

Its a long shot but can anyone on here help or know of anyone who can?

I'm off to Disneyland Paris EARLY Weds a.m and leaving for Wales tomorrow from 5pm + so I wont be online until Sunday, but please feel free to PM me and ofcourse reply to the thread.

Thank you all for reading smile.gif

I'd love to take the lab on as she sounds like my kind of challenge, however I am full at the inn. Beagles just don't float my boat. If any one is genuinely interested I will get contact details for you.

  12. At 12 wks its sounds like you are rushing a bit anyhow and at that age you can only spoil them by overtraining, a puppy wont ever go too far from you at that age The likely hood is the dog will rebel as it matures and undo all you think you have achieved OR it will become too sticky and lack confidence. Personally I should just play with the thing

    A rarity I know but I agree.

My pup is a year old and we've only just been training stop whistle for a couple of months. Pup has loads to learn, house training, what to and what not to chew.. as well as basics around people etc. Most gun dog owners don't start training until about 6 months I believe. Too much too soon = too little later on. Another note - you challenge the puppy too much now and then when she's older - you'll have to engage her brain more because she's smarter - she'll get bored quicker and thats when you get destruction and bad behaviours.

  13. All my dogs are chipped, they all have collars with legally compliant tags - if and when they work I will be taking them without collars though.

Tattooing of police dogs I believe in some areas of the world are done on the inner lip of them or sometimes belly - making it harder for it to be cut off - like ears for example.

DNA profiles can also be kept - I believe the KC has a database.

If a dog is stolen there is little chance - despite the above - of the dog being returned to the owner. At least not alive anyway. Sadly.

  14. good point, he knows leave in the sense to leave something if i tell him and he's good at that. so could try apply it here too.

see this is the hard thing, sometimes if hes got his sights on something a treat wont deter him from it.... had it earlier today, he went and saw another dog, sniffed and carried on, ran on ahead, i brought him back, got him to sit by me then the dog came back but i made him wait while this other dog played around him (he did good here as he was close to me so didnt think he could get away with anything lol ) but i offered a treat and he just ignored till the other dog was gone.

no offence at all mate, i think you probably have a point, i do play with him, chuck stuff and mess around, but not loads, i cuddle him more then a play with him i guess. but i do go by a "nothing in life in is free" rule where by to get a cuddle or scratch he must sit or come or "touch" ect and that improved the master/dog bond i felt when i started that.

i'll get there as you say, its just doing it. my mind had wondered to a E collar so i can give a vibrate when he ignored my command and carries on running, i dont know....

The nothing in life is free" is a brilliant way to train.

Sometimes it's worth just having a bit of silly time with them. I chase mine - then run in the opposite direction and let them chase me.. just play silly beggars with them.

Louie is the same with - treats didn't work at first, neither do toys. So I upped it. I started taking out cheese and hotdogs instead of kibble. And cooked chicken and now I have a dehydrator - I take out dried heart, liver and kidney. I am so much more interesting with these.

Normally I advocate only positive methods but noise aversion might work well here. Training discs in particular. A friend has a collie that would be oblivious to everything she tried. One day she gave up and threw a lead at him - well in front of him but it gave him enough of a stop for her to then recall him and reward him for that. Then she bought some training discs and when he'd start off after another dog - she'd throw them in front of him (making sure he didn't see it was her that was throwing them) and recalling him when he stopped. He now doesn't run over to other dogs anymore. But then I'd try anything before and E - collar.

  15. i do too so call him back, he comes back but the moment i release him hes shooting off a good 100-150m? away to play with this other dog, ignoring my command.

Your problem is - you're releasing him. Why not leash him until the dog is out of sight? Or teach a leave? Or wait till the dog has passed but throw some treats about to keep him busy and interested in you. The latter one means dog = interaction from you.

The thing is - that dog over there is SO much more fun than you, yes you feed him, you walk him, you train him - but do you play with him, interact with him on walks? I mean no offence by that of course.

I have one the exact same so I share your pain - you'll get there, we're still getting there and he's 3 but lots of improvement :)

  16. I'm afraid I'm one of those who celebrates the dogs birthdays. Not over the top though, Birthday walk on their own, something special for their dinner.

    So here she is.
