Germany are currently building a load (don't have a reference for the number but it's >10 I think) brown coal fired power stations.

Yet for some reason we're shutting down cleaner coal fired power stations because of EU directives.

As before, a small amount of wind power can make a contribution to the generation mix, but when this gets past a certain percentage you have to start building

conventional power stations in parallel as backup for when the wind doesn't blow. And there are significant periods when the wind doesn't blow over the

    majority of the UK.

Even if you cover the country in windmills, tidal and all the other 'renewable' generation you can think of you'll _still_ need conventional power

    stations to meet our demand.

    Nial

Yes you do need other power stations to support, like I had said in pervious posts it about balance. Ukip wants to stop the support of wind power and promote coal power, it's a step backwards. If you don't help with funding then a area won't be explored and no further advancement would be made.

  2.

The EU sells much more into Britain than Britains exports to the rest of the EU.

They couldn't afford to impose any trade barriers, and as I posted before MEXICO has negotiated the same trade access that we have as a member of the EU (and Norway and Sweden).

    Nial

The countries you have listed do trade with Europe, but still have to follow the EU laws/rules on trade, if they (EU) change then them countries have no say it. Also have different trade taxes

Exactly, are you saying mr, Mercedes,VW,Renault,BMW,Citroen, etc are not going to export cars to our island what a load of rubbish, you can still trade with Europe without being in it that's just scaremongering and people fall for it everytime......

Re the car company's not exporting to us no they will still export it will just cost more. Nissan moved some production of qashqai/note to a Russian factory for the Russian market due to trade costs. Certian companies use the UK as a foot in the door to EU. if we werent members then nissan would shut up the factorys here and move to india (which they have done micra is made there) or else where. why pay us good money, when you can pay a third to someone else? This subject (re cars) I know too much about as i get weekly monthly briefs on the EU market and how it effects us (Nissan). You would be surprised how much hinges on the EU re manufacturing in this country, I was.

  3. Does it matter what the figure is.....Whatever amount it is, It would be better spent in this country on things that those who have a right to be here need and not squandered on the wages of non elected nobodiys. in foreign lands.

It's the case of paying in £8bn per year, we export about £400bn to EU per year. Leaving is not just the money we have people working in EU countries would could loose there jobs due to not be eligible to work in EU countries, it all depends on what deal we can work out for leaving. I think leaving is a good idea but if tomorrow we said no more EU where would it leave us? But we can't just stop like that. It would take years to leave probably longer than one party was in charge. Then you need to next political power to keep it up.

  4.

Not sure where you got that figure from but for the sake of accuracy the net amount we pay is actually around 4 billion a year so that's 11 million a day.

UKIP use a report created in 2008 by Gerard batten ukip MEP which claims its costing the uk £65bn a year to be in the EU. It gets to this amount by using figures from knock on effects eg upholding laws/rules and policy created by the EU. It's clever way of making the figure higher for shock value. The policy's it uses to create a larger figure would still need to be monitored by the uk if we where in the EU or not so the cost is still there.

  5. I live in jarrow next to the shopping centre, where the job centre is and I have seen lasses going in (I guess to sign on) in them. Not to mention people at the pizza shop or shopping in them. Mind boggles.

Am going to get some red longs johns, cowboy boots and a Stetson

  6.

The £50 million a day which we would save by leaving the EU would help

Non EU membership would be great because I don't agree with us (UK) being tied up with them. It's a big waste of money. If we just left tho trade sanction would be put in place until we sort out a trade deal with the EU like other countries have. Countries who trade with the EU but aren't a member still have to abide by EU laws/rules but don't have a say in the forming of said laws/rules. It would mean we could sort out are fishing and farming, also give control of are own laws. Also a lot of non EU companies and non EU members invest in the uk as we are a safe gateway into Europe, which boosts are economy. It's a tangled web and we are in deep, I would like to leave but if we do and it goes bad there would be no turning back. Maybe it would be better to re hash are current terms with the EU from with in rather than the outside looking in.

  7. I am genuinley shocked by the level of Ukip support generated in this post and the lack of any real discussion on the reality of voting Ukip into power.

    I too beleive that the current parties are a waste of space and have seriously blurred the boundaries of their policies in an attempt to steal votes from the other parties, which has disengaged the public and caused further dis-trust in the parties true agendas. However this is just the evolution of a very old policitical game and I am sure we will see (as the pendulum swings back) that they will adjust their positions. Therefore I am unhappy also like everyone and would like to give the parties a bit of shock treatment, but voting for Ukip is an extreme form of protest, and you should be careful what you wish for as;

    - looking at their policies relating to the armed forces you could possibly be lead to beleive they were building the foundations for a communist state. Question - how many communist states permit their comrades to hold guns under licences unless they are in the armed forces?

    - All leaders will tell you what you want to hear until they are in power, and you will find out the REAL meaning of their intentions

    - Ukip have no historic base or evidence to prove their abilty to improve or even run this country - if elected. Voting for them and you are voting for an unknown untested rule of power which is radical (to say the least). Look at Lib dems. Untested and unproven - voted into power by default and what have they produced?

If I owned a company that was sinking would I put an untested extreemist at the helm to pull it out of the flames or perhaps a more steady hand with a known track record?

The United Kingdom needs a steady hand not a great big size 11 boot stamping around. Also because Ukip have never been in power we dont really know what they will do but everyone out there appears to be thinking - "hey they have never done anything wrong lets give them a go". This is the basis for a very dangerous method of vote selection and in return you will receive an unknown party with an unknown agenda and ability to govern us during a very dangerous time in the countries history.

It concerns me that people are stating on the one hand how and what a mess all the policiticians have got us into. Well, no one is perfect and no one on the planet makes the correct decision 100% of the time. But this mess is global, and not limited to the UK. And it will take time to correct itself.

I am afraid that money makes the world go round. This is a fact you should ignor at your peril. Therefore the day that Ukip secure power will be the day that all international investors/banks/intitutions will review their association with the UK and perhaps feel that this is not the type of country they should base their investment/employment in given its new and very radical governed state.

I dont think any goverment voted in power today will have the magic pill to make all this pain go away overnight. But do I want to roll the dice by opting for an unknown party with extreeme views and postions bringing the country back from the edge? No I dont think so.

Deep breath. Steps down of soap box.

Well said . When you look at ukip policies a lot of them are contradiction and more what people want to hear over what can be done. Style over substance so to speak. It talks of cutting taxes and cutting spending but doubling the defence budget, doubling prisons and building boots camps. 2 million public workers to loose jobs and to be replaced by 1 million manufacturing jobs and million jobs though tax breaks. Where are these jobs from? National industry? The bit about doubling the size of the TA, the TA cant be doubled with out the volunteers not really the governments choice. The health reform is scary, we already outsource some NHS services like doctors surgeries and it doesn't work corners are cut because there is a £s to be made.

Never thought about what the rest of the world would see, from the outside looking in Ukip must look a very extreme party of they got in power. Gearing up for war and putting the countries boarders on lockdown. Not to mention the lack of experience of running a country. I would love to live in country where jobs where a plenty, poverty was no more and people used the systems in place to help and not get a free ride. But it won't happen money talks and some people want a free ride.

    You asked..

"I think more effort should be put into using wave platforms and river turbines as a resource. We are not short of water and it never stops moving.

Can be done so its un-noticeable or at least blends into the landscape."

The answer is that no it can't.

There isn't enough power in river flow.

Tidal is guaranteed twice a day but what do you do in between? There aren't many more suitable sites for hydro in the UK unless we start flooding occupied land.

There's been a tidal power generator installed at Strangford Lough since 2008....

    http://www.seageneration.co.uk/

If you look at a map of the UK you'll see this is one of the most suitable places for tidal power generation, it's a large tidal body of water with a narrow inlet/outlet.

This generates 1.2 MW of electricity.

Peak UK demand is about 60 GW, ie you'd need 5000 Strangford installations (in fact more when you take into account the inefficiency of conversion twice during storage).

As I said it's hard to get your head round the power that a coal or gas fired power station can actually generate.

    Nial.

Instead of thinking of just one source of power eg 5000 strangford needed. Couple that with wind power offshore wind farms, solar power, small hydro power stations for towns near rivers. It all adds up. People are looking at all or nothing. Coal power isn't the answer for the uk we don't have high grade coal any more really coupled with the cost of reintroducing mining we would just import coal. Like someone else said once the demand heightens for coal so will the price. The point was ukip are wanting to stop funding for wind power and use coal. With out the support of the government people won't advance the technology used in renewable energy as nowhere to sell the final product on to.

  9.

just had a look at the hatsan website (not edgar brothers) and like the look of both the at44 and bt65 would you have any idea of prices (roughly)and would anyone know of a north east dealer?

I couldn't find a dealer in the NE region, people where saying that hatsans where a canny gun for the money. But a load of people saying they are rubbish so I wanted to have a look and feel for myself.but couldn't. It's like everything re air rifles, people have there favourite brands. i would just go to shop with some in mind and have hold of the guns see how they feel. i was going to get a tx200 after reading about them, nearly bought one second hand and was going to get it posted, glad i didnt tho. went to the shop and was looking about had a hold of them and didnt like it, ended up with a HW97 instead. I like the look of the BSA ultras and scorpions had hold of them both (not shot them) and they feel really good.

  10.

Yes, but when the wind isn't blowing the plant has a guaranteed supply from the grid.

If you're trying to supply the grid you need back up for when the wind isn't blowing. When there's a small amount of wind provision there's usually enough backup available to do this.

If you increase the amount of wind provision you reach the point where there isn't enough backup available. You then have to build 100% conventional backup for whatever wind power you're installing, or the lights _will_ go out. At this point you're ******* money away building both, you might as well just build cheaper more efficient conventional power stations.

One reason wind is adopted is the massive amount of subsidy that's pumped into the system, it's a way for wealthy landowners to pocket £££ in subsidys.

Many of the current government that are promoting 'renewables' have positions on the boards of renewable companies.

The whole thing makes me

    Nial.

I don't think I said that's all the plant is run off, I just said it takes a chunk off the lecky bill. People don't like the look WT so people say it ****. Look at other countries that use wind power top three are china, USA and Germany if its that bad why are they doing it?

  11.

I believe Nissan have 9 working wind turbine's vesta 0.65 MW hour jobs, that should be good for about 8 or 9% of Nissan,s needs, a help but not the answer, wind is innefiecient expensive and unreliable, clean coal (yes it can be done) and nuclear is the way forward.

    KW

How did you come up with 8-9% just out of interest? I know the 6 where bought for a cost 1.1million which covered 7% of plant power which could power around 2500 homes constant. If 2500 homes spent on average £80 pm on electric that's £200000 a month over a year £2400000 more than initial out lay, I know running costs are involved as well. Food for thought that's all.

  12.

Which turbines are they? Are they the huge ones or are they smaller? Because that would make a difference to efficiency, cost of erection, etc.

I would rather people used other forms of renewable energy which don't destroy the landscape for everyone.

They are the huge ones, I mean huge as well. Re different renewable sources, I do think there is better forms, a few lads at work have solar panels and reckon they are great. One lad has a app on his phone so he can turn on/off different devices when he's not there during the day when he's getting free electric. Am not that fussed on pollution side of things it's more about sustainability. For me build a huge under ground nuke power plant so no one can see it just Not In My Back Yard.

  13. Start saving Tescos carrier bags (It's the only carriers we've got left) because those desert wellies in QM stores are not very waterproof.

I remember as a kid putting carrier bags on my feet then putting my shoes so my feet didn't get wet. Lol I just had a image of load of soldiers trying to sneak up on the enemy, with the rustle of carrier bags.

  14. It's us as consumers who aid EE workers on farms. Food has to be perfect to look at or we won't buy it, we also want it at rock bottom prices. I look at something's in the super market and wonder how its so cheap. Eg. I bought a bag of carrots from asda for 50p. If you break that price down how much did the farmer get? What was his profit if any at all. Same with milk £1 for 4 pints. It's great for us at the check out we but what corner has been cut to get it there. Just look at the horse meat thing.

  15. I would like some of the American gun laws to make it over here. I would love a pistol to shoot but can't here which is a shame. Some of the hunting law they have is good as well. The government should have thought of instead of trying to sell off some woodland and Moore land, they should have issued hunting licences to make a long term cash flow. Just a thought I had. Some of the American laws are a bit crazy in regards to buying guns. But like everything we see on TV take it with a pinch of salt. I remember watch bowling for columbine, when Michael Moore walked out of a bank with a gun for opening a account. It looked really bad. But what wasn't shown was he had to call the bank the day before to get gun at the bank and insisted it was there for him to pick up. It was also registered in his name before the pick up.

  16.

and out of your post...what proportion of it would generate more jobs in this country?.....The reopening of mines bit...or the importing coal bit?

Well if mines could be re opened then yes it would create jobs but so would the construction of wind turbines. The problem I can see with re opening coal mines is: just out of interest how much do you know about mining? I know nothing other than the beamish mine I visited, non of my mates are miners or anybody I know really, couple of blokes in the club used to be miners but are in there 60s. It's a dead profession. Is there a coal mine still open in the uk That is profitable? (That is a genuine question, am not being sarcastic) I would say the chance is we would import coal as in the short to mid term its cheaper like everything else we don't make now.

  17.

It is not crazy to oppose wind farms. They are ugly, they destroy the landscape for everyone, they are actually quite destructive with all the concrete they use for foundations and building of access roads, especially when peat is destroyed, and they don't even do what they are supposed to do.

They are hugely inefficient and we need fossil fuel power stations as a back up. So the question is not whether we want wind farms or fossil fuel power stations, it's "what do we want, a fossil fuel power station or a fossil fuel power station plus thousands of wind turbines".

UKIP are not opposed to renewables in principle, but they just don't want them to be funded with excessive government subsides. They want them to be funded by the market. That way, economical solutions would emerge and become popular.

Here's an article showing how sustainable wind farms are.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1350811/In-China-true-cost-Britains-clean-green-wind-power-experiment-Pollution-disastrous-scale.html

The bit about they don't work or supposed to do. I work for Nissan (NMUK) @ Sunderland and are plant has about 10+ and they take a huge amount of the power bill away. So much so they are planning on investing in more to help run the battery plant (makes the batteries for leaf) for me its about balance. I have lived near a coke works and wouldn't want one near me again. Would take 1000 wind turbines over something spewing smoke out causing smog and black dust in the air at times. Coal mines aren't to nice to look at either. As for the concrete used in the construction it's not great but everything has a bad side. Like re opening the pits to mine or build new ones, new roads need to get to them, more train tracks being used/built/reopened to shift the coal about and trucks on the road hauling it or the cost of importing coal.

  18. The opt out of the NHS is very worrying, the poorer people will opt out to save money. Then probably not have enough insurance or no insurance and end up in a bad situation. You only need to look at the American health care system. The support coal fired power and not wind farms, is crazy. Sustainable energy is the way forward people who have solar panels save money. Could pick a lot of it apart.

    • Non means-tested "basic cash benefit" for low earners and unemployed. Jobseekers allowance and incapacity benefit is scrapped.

^ ^ if its non means tested how do lower earners only get it?

Certain parts seem to have a few answers but it won't work. If you have ever played SIM CITY on the PC you will understand :Cut taxes, Increase spending, buy the best for the public and heavier taxes on business, all that happens is industry moves away, people loose jobs and you loose money hand over fist. Am sure the conservatives had similar ideas and made similar claims but look where we are now.
