  1. I know this post is 3 years old but I live on the Plain and now retired I am very keen to get similar rights. Could you let me know who Ineed to get in touch with to get the ball rolling. Regards Andy
  2. Anyone else noticed or picked up dead pigeons, I am involved in three game shoots and have picked up unmarked dead birds on all three, Hants/Wilts border. I have not noticed this before ?
  3. While dogging in today found a dead hen with head clean bitten off, no other damage , I was wondering what might of done it ?
  4. All the gear no idea ? first time out all new gear, I only have permission on one 50 acre field no birds on the field, set up half way up the field with the wind coming from behind, sat there for about and hour nothing came in, the only birds I saw were just flying over near the top corner with a wood behind, so moved all the gear and set up again, this time put the decoys a bit further out furthest about fifty yards from the hide, in an L shape with a landing area about 35 yards out, still very few birds moving at all, after about half an hour a pair of birds came right into the decoys, rushed and missed.......... learnt a bit, had a shot, looking forward to going out again, don't suppose you can expect to decoy birds that are just not there. I have booked on a BASC pigeon day so this should help, I think I have found a flight line now, guessing I need to put a bit of movement into the decoy's with a flapper, magnet, or bouncer to bring the odd passing bird in. and at least I have got a bit of mud on my kit now !!
  5. Do pigeons take any notice of a dog when coming into roost ? I take my spaniel roost shooting, and there is me all Cammed up and a liver & white spaniel sat by me (if I am lucky), birds also seem to come in when he is retrieving, and hunting, but never having not had him there would it be better to leave him in the Landy and just get him out to pick up at the end any body got any views ?.....mind you don't think it would be the same without him there.
  6. Thanks to Pigeon Watch, prepared cv had a shave and left the cammo gear at home, just got my first permission. Shame is its only one 50 acre field of Barley, with a main road down one side, but the plus is a slim belt of woods down one side and hedgerows on the other. Rest of the farm is on MOD land so no shooting allowed. Going out with the binos on Friday to have a good watch and see if there are any flight lines. Let the fun begin !!
  7. We have got a new Old quad for our shoot , need a spin feeder any ideas for a home made one ?
  8. I have permission in a large woodland, only started pigeon shooting this year, I am a member of the self run Pheasant syndicate that that shoots the wood. I am looking for someone to shoot with me and impart their advice knowledge to me. Also to take me decoying if they have their own permission. At the moment all the gear no idea ! but very keen. Andy
  9. Hi Mate if you want got some roost shooting near Tidworth, would be happy to take you in exchange for a bit of decoying also you could have a go with your air rifle in the roost...........
  10. light north wind misty, very few birds came in, we shot 2........loft poles a waste of time they dont get the decoys high enough and very difficult to get them looking natural in the tree, gaffer taped a cut off water bottle to the top of the pole made it much easier to get the decoys down this morning (Gave up and went to the pub last night). West wind forcast next weekend hope it will be better! I will be leaving the decoys at home and travelling light, moving around the edge of the woods and getting under the flight lines.
  11. Lets us know how you got on, better take a load of cartridges !!
  12. Decoys and poles arrived today.....went up the woods about 3pm spotted a holly tree with about 20 birds in it. carried all the gear across the woods, birds flew off, put decoys up in the bush. settled down all cammoed up misty evening little wind back to a bush finished at 6;30pm. 2 shots and one of those was at a pair of passing Rooks. two decent birds did come in but was not concentrating sod's law. I had a nightmare getting the decoys out of the tree, think i might get a big magnet and tape it to the end of the lofting pole next time, thought about gaffer taping a cut of plastic bottle to the top as well, and was late to the pub !! NOT giving UP !! back tomorrow and going to try a different part of the wood, not sure about the roost decoys though, might put them up and move about a bit as well, then pick them up sunday morning . Could take the wife for a walk as its mothers day and get them then!! look forward to seeing the results
  13. Have popped over most nights this week checking flightlines and watching where the birds drop in, should have my lofting poles and decoys for the week end plan is to shoot Sat so here goes........fingers crossed for the weather
  14. Hi, member of small self run #pheasant shoot in a Forestry woodland, we also have the roost shooting, I have found most of the pigeons seem to go into the conifer plantations, early birds go into the high beech trees on the edge, then drop down into the conifers, when i try to shoot them in the conifers they are either too quick or too high or just cant see the *******, should I be patient and wait in one spot, can hear flapping and cooing it winds me up !! or keep mobile and move to where i think birds are going in. Very frustrating at the moment as its difficult to see flightlines through the trees, some feathers on the floor, but found no **** yet. is it worth decoying into the field at the woods edge early on ? Cheers
