  1. Hi ,

I went from an AYA Yeoman to an OU many years ago . It improved my shooting greatly .

    MK70 reviews here , though I haven't used one I currently have a browning 725, among others .

    http://www.gunmart.net/gun_review/miroku_mk70_sporter/

Not wishing to impose on your choice , but the following might help you choose . Gunmart reviews on these guns are onsite to .

A Beretta 686 or 687 Sporter , or a 725 sporter would be a very good all round gun . However for walked up game I use a 28 inch gun which I then swap out the chokes on

when it goes to the coast , using extended after market chokes in effect giving me 29 or 29.5 inches . So you have more versatility built into a Single Gun .

Using a 30in gun on a 20yd woodcock is hampering ones shooting ,

good luck with your new Gun when you choose ,

  2. Ah well Richie10,

doesn't look like were going to hear about too many Big Bags ! .

I imagine Its somehow , un gentlemanly to speak about such things . Kind of Like 007 , not talking about How many Martina,s , oh , sorry Martinis , he has shaken and

stirred, or the Size of Ones Gun .

Ah well , just have to Break out RPG ,Ralph Payne Galway or Col Hawkers Diaries again Id guess, Big bags there , but Too big in fact , for my taste at least .

Besides, one man can only carry so much , I for one don't venture out on a Gator or a quad, just Shanks Mare ,

    Bon Chasse !

  3. Teal ,

Italian made decoys for the American Market . As per the previously posted pic.

However I find that the Extra , white Stripe certainly Helps at Dusk even to Draw In Wegion , when only Teal deeks are carried .( MORE DEEKS LESS WEIGHT)

Teal can vary a bit in the White Regions, please see the link below. Slightly! off topic North American Teal, Eurasian cross Teal also carries over to Wegion, as I found out 2 seasons ago When I shot a Drake Wegion , North American - Eurasian cross, quite distinctive.

  4. Hi CBL ,

thank you for your comments .

I am quite sure there are many , Great , funny and perhaps a few Stories of Survival out there to , twud be great to hear some .

Great Shooting there Penelope and very well written to . So what about you Richie10 , wheres your story or 2 ?. Or will we find a New " Wildfowling Anthology " Vol 1 and 2

newly published on Amazon in about 3 months ? lol.

I usually shoot alone , though with my son when he is Back home from college.

To be honest I seldom , never fail to get a shot at something, while out after Duck , though I often return empty handed .

The best bag I had with another gun was about 5 years ago . An evening flight with my 18 month old Springer , Clint , the guy in the pic . Not much wind and no great expectation , out went the Deeks , up went the hide and in came the Teal . At the end of flight after several cracking shots , the Bag was 18 Teal and not a Bird lost , credit a young dog who had great fun on the evening .

That was a great Night and now , its over to the forum .

Yes the 2 on the right , are Jack Snipe and yes It is legal to shoot them where I live . I usually Shoot between one and six most seasons .

The multi coloured cases I picked up after other "shooters".

  5. RED LETTER days ?,

Well, Im Inclined to think , that means different things to some of us .

Allow me to tell you what comes to mind , when I wander back down memory lane , Sorry I mean across , the SLOB , MUCK and OOzze !.

Last season , well pre Christmas , A single Teal comes From left to right ,( I Hate L TO R) out of a creek , Screaming across the Sky about 45yds out and 30yds up .

1st shot way behind , so with a conscious push swing right threw him and a 50 yarder tumbles stone dead .

A few weeks later , another Big BLOW , But things were slow , then a Single Teal , wind in his Tail again , tearing threw the sky , I mount the gun fire the second its in my shoulder and another Teal is dead in the sky , only this time its still going , must have been 30 or 35yds later before the Wind dropped it from its grasp , Splash and another Superb retrieve from that little Pixie face Springer you see beside my handle here on page side.

Mallard that I shot , L and R etc , sure I remember them and the Wegion and the Missed pintail , well I got 1 , yes in mind , BUT IT ALWAYS SEEEMS TO BE THE SCREAMING TEAL SHOTS , that stick with me . As I was wearing a vid cam I have the last Teal on video , what a shot a Stunner .

But to be honest , its not big bags that I have Red marks in my Diary for , its days like these ! .

Four seasons back , awaiting the flight , I hear a distant call of a bird I haven't heard in real life before ! on tv yes , surely not , it cant be . Oh yes it was , as the Full moon rose , ice crinkling underfoot , the Unmistakable shape of a Crane comes into view , then another and another , 13 in all .

I was stunned . they landed in a field across the pond from me , stayed a few minuets and rose , flew across the Face of the LOW MOON , if you've seen the movie ET , well it was just like that . Etched into the mind until death .

Another year , more than 10 back , in the height of a Storm , as dusk turns into nightfall , I find myself on a dyke bank . lying in the reeds and grass , as the Rains gushes across my cheeks . One of those nights when it is actually too bad to shoot , I see at eyeball level a small bird coming towards me , ???? whats that ,a snipe perhaps ?, the wind blows it up and down and left and right wobbling in flight , God what an awful night .

It passes me within reach , though I of course let it go on its struggle for shelter . What was it ?, a Kingfisher , a Beautiful Kingfisher.

I shot 13 Teal and wegion that night , a fine bag A red letter day for me , Yes , but not because of the bag size , but because I saw a Small Animal battle nature on a savage night , as it had to and not like I , there by choice . Another memory Etched .

When you've seen a Peregrine , diving on Mallard , Black Tailed Godwits and on Lapwings , see the fight for life and death , the sunsets and the sunrises , the moon rises over the misty water and the look in your Dogs eyes when he swims back frozen and exhausted, having made that once in a season retrieve , how could 20 30 or 40 Duck surpass that memory ??,

a pic att... an evening flight and a morning flt.

2 pics of deeks , I re painted after last season .

Leaving aside the arguments for and against Black silhouette V, painted Deeks , IMHO once you decide to paint it should be as close as possible to what you are

trying to Decoy in . Other than Larger White areas that is what I have tried to achieve .

I used Matt Humbrol model paints , Gloss will do and then let it dry for a few days and over spray with Matt vanish as per tin in scan . Protects the finish as well as the matt effect ,

works well for me . No Mallard Drake as I just discovered I didn't re paint since last outing , they will do for next season just fine . If you are using lots of White and Grey paint , household undercoat will be just fine and better when sealed with a coat of matt varnish ,

    Enjoy !

Oh , last thought , Paint the Eye Gloss black , after you have sprayed the Matt varnish over the whole Deek .

  7. I use an A400 Xtreme and have been Wildfowling for 45 years .

Started shooting with a S/S and a 2nd one when that Wore out .I have shot my fair share with the S/S , but found I shot better when I moved over to an O/U.

Then I moved onto a Semi , a Fabarm Euro 3 and enjoyed that for 11 seasons .

I had a 391 after that and a Maxus for 3 years , both Problem Children . In between I bought a B725 and often use that on the Foreshore , especially when I intend to shoot a few snipe there also .

I have had quite a few O/Us in between also , all 12g and have never been Happier than when using the 400 xtreme in optifade camo , a Joy to use .

So nice that this Feb , though I ordered it in late Sept , I got an A400 20g , what a lovely Gun , I feel like Micky in The Sorcerer's Apprentice. I also Bought 2 Ext chokes from the USA , for it . Only type that makes these for the 20 are Comp n Choke.

So , yes The Semi Auto 12g , is without doubt the best Gun to Use on the Foreshore IMHO. I enjoy using my O/U also and will never use another S/S in the field ,

    Quack Quack ,

  8. Hello Mighty Prawn ,

well done on your Build .

Plastic , some form of , would be my choice at this point .That being the case, of the Plastics Boats out there, I like this one .

    Big Al,

you will find a Dealer in your Home county , in Portrush, details here .

    http://www.marinerevolution.com/dealers.htm

By the way Im on the same Island as you , only way down South , in Co Cork .

FMS , Flood Marine up in Tyrone have some fine small boats . I was up there last year and John Flood is very helpful . I get all my Outboard engine

service parts in the post from him .

    Islandgun ,

thanks for the info , you are right , the 400 Linder is great for A to B , runs and light Fun jobs , when things get , Interesting on the Water ,

leave your linder at home . The beam on this is quite wide which makes rowing for me , a bit difficult . A 6ft tall , younger gent , should be ok in that regard,

both of which I am not .

    P.

  9. Thanks Islandgun ,

I bought the linder for ease of maint , had both Timber and grp boats previously.

A few pics of the 400 Sportsman . Well able to travel at speed , but unnerving seeing the Flooring Flex underneath you , keep thinking of Rocks! .

Also at anchor , being so light it will push over to the side easily as you move about , not a stable gun platform .

Cant get into the shallows I want to , that bow gets stuck really well .

  10. Hi ,

well firstly I hope you enjoy using the gun , it certainly looks the part .

However , my experience of using one over 3 seasons is this .

Easy to strip and easy to clean , I did so after each and every trip out , fired or un shot , cleaned , my army training never left me and that's coming up on 40 yrs ago.

What I don't like most about this gun is the Magazine cut off kept getting caught and knocked on , or off . If you don't notice this and you get a few birds overhead , you will only have one shot . The butt pad shape , concave , didn't suit me I changed mine to a Browning 725 flat pad and it was a perfect fit . I have a 725 also. My main problem was I just couldn't shoot straight with it . I raised the comb , lowered the comb , cast off cast on more cast off still not to my liking .

The chokes Pattern way to wide for what they are marked , I usually shoot 1/4 choke and gram load , duck only no geese here , I had to up that to an extended 1/2 choke to get the same knock down power with this gun .

Sure some FTE, FTF issues most semis will do that to you every now and then .

Next issue , wouldn't fire , couldn't open the bolt . Back to the shop , back to Belgium and nearly 6 months later - it have lost a pin from the breach block jammed up in the slide.

Got it back shooting ok , until one evening a flight of Pintail came into a flooded field , 1 hit 2 misses , should have been a triple . I can hear the blame the operator not the machine song , sorry , enough time with it and got the Divorce .

Now I use an A400 Xtreme , no issues and shooting straight . All guns from all companies can give problems , I have had my Beretta problems to SV 10 PERENNIA , don't buy one .

2 guys in my club Bought a Max after me and one of those has been traded in also , he couldn't get on with it either .

I hope it works out for you ,

    Cheers ,

    Quack Quack !

  11. post-70158-0-85193700-1398256994_thumb.jpgThat FIREBALL , sure looks nice , with a Little Gerry Anderson type Magic , Some cockpit Coming , Clam shell hide doors, forward hatch - stowage and Ballast re a Motor on the stern .

Some tracking strakes on the Keel , would also help reduce wear for beaching , a pair or rowlocks and a single on the stern for sculling ,A touch of Camo , or light grey or white paint and a guy could have decent Punt there .

Anybody got any ideas for a conversion ?, have you done one yourself.

Just don't have the skill set to make one from scratch .

Thanks for the ideas , keep posting any others please ,

Pic my dog , after a Triple on Mallard with a Maxus - which I got rid of after it had to go back to Belgium for repairs , stopped firing couldn't open it etc .

I clean all my guns after each and every outing . A pin detached for the Breach block and jammed up inside . Using an A400 XTREME now , no issues so far.

  12. GRP , would be my choice, moulded plastic might do .

Yaks , not good if it blows up , narrow beam , great if it works for you but my back wouldn't stand up to 2 or 3 hours of yaking.

will check out the Bic boats , thanks.

  13. Thanks for the Replies .

I att a pic of Mr Gilchrist in a small Dory , does anybody know what the make is ?.

2nd pic is my ideal boat for where I would be hunting ,

I might have the Skill set for some Woodworking tasks , making Cartridge boxes , gun cleaning kit boxes etc .

Setting sail in something I might produce would be beyond my comfort zone .

Some great boat work on site here though for sure ,

  14. Hi, for sometime now I have been trying to find a boat suitable for Duck Shooting in estuaries and Creeks along the coast.

I already own a Linder 400 Sportsman , but find I cannot go as Shallow as I would like in this boat and at 13,2" engine dog and gear ,

    rowing it, is a challenge.

So my spec would be , shallow draft , wide beam 40"-50" ish and between 10 and 12ft long , capable of taking a 3 - 5 hp outboard .

Some nice Sneak boat Vids on youtube from the States and Denmark . I have tried a European web search in Denmark , France etc care of a Translator

and cannot find a commercially available boat for sale . The Otter types I feel are not beamy enough and im not looking for a layout boat either .

Buying a boat in the USA and shipping it over with import taxes is beyond stupid monies.

So short of buying a Sailing Dinghy and converting it ( Has anyone done this ?), Can Anybody recommend a vessel for this task please ?.

I attach a few pics of the kind of thing I have in mind ,

thanks in advance for any Ideas.
