Thought I'd drop back in to say that the spiral copper brush posted earlier in the thread is amazing! Barrels look better than ever. Also placed an order. I'm out at the weekend for possibly the last time this season so it will be getting a good scrub down and put back in its case. Will also try the wire wool as well

I use a Beretta 690 and a mixture of Gamebore Black Gold or Lyalvale Supreme game. My brush at the moment is not brilliant, which is why I was asking. If I buy a new set, then I'll maybe try an alternative to see if that would make a difference.

All, I've had some real issues trying to remove barrel fouling the last few times I've been out. About 3-4 inches into the chambers and the fouling is very heavy and obvious the moment you hold the barells up to the light. I've been using napier bore solvent with a payne galway brush, but it took me over an hour to clean both barrels. Even using a cordless drill took me forever. Am I using the right tools for the job? Would a phosphor brush be better suited to heavy fouling? or any other tools/cleaners for that matter? I'm still fairly new to shotgun ownership, so apologies if its a daft question. Thank you both for the advice. The barrels are actually ok, but there is a line of surface rust along the top of the fore end where it meets the barrels. When I compare the 626 to the 690, the bluing does look slightly faded in comparison. So there is no issues oiling the entire gun? I was worried it may ruin the bluing.

Chaps, Possibly a stupid question... I've got a Beretta 690 and a 626 that I adore. The 690 is brand new and the bluing is perfect, the 626 on the other hand is 30yr old and the bluing is getting tired but still quite good considering. Question is, do you guys clean the barrel bluing with anything? Do you oil it down with a rag or have any routine to keep it in good condition? It's mostly about the 626 as its otherwise perfect. Thanks very much chaps! I'll try the Beretta website. I've got some 32's I use in my 690 which are 70mm so I may try these out on the clay ground first.

It depends what you want from it I suppose. I shoot a 626 SxS and a 690 Sporting. The 626 has good wood, decent bluing and the action is nicely engraved for what it is. Cost me a third of what a 486 would cost and I can't complain really. The 486 engraving is lovely and the wood is a better grain as standard, but if you look about there are plenty cheaper beretta SxS that will do the job nicely.

The max I'm putting through it is 28g and initially it doesn't hurt. However, after a day on the peg or at the clay ground it starts to get tedious. Much more than my 690. Interesting you mentioned 28g. I always wondered what the maximum cartridge load it can take. Can it go bigger than 28g?

Thanks ChrisAsh, I'll give them a try. Looking into it further, I can see there are also temporary/slip-over recoil pads which cover part of the stock and extend the padding. Does anyone have any experience of these? I also saw some shoulder recoil pads which you strap over your body. Are these any good? Doesnt look like I'm short of options luckily. Being new to this I'm learning daily. Every day is a school day!

Morning all, Looking for some advice. I have a Beretta 626 SxS and it currently has no recoil pad fitted and can be quite brutal on the heavier loads. Are all pads grind to fit, or can i buy a specific pad for that gun or stock dimensions? I'm hoping I can get one of the Beretta ones and just screw to fit myself if thats the case. The stock is in pretty good shape, and I dont want to risk damaging it just before I start my pheasant season by grinding a recoil pad on to it. That said, if its the right thing to do then I will need to find a local gunsmith to do the work for me. Can you recommend any good pads that would work on this gun? Cheers Masterplan

Thanks for that Bruno. Any particular makes and models? I was considering Aya or similar but you make a lot of sense and I'd definitely consider changing my approach. I have a few driven days booked this year and a restored English side by side would be the icing on the cake!

I would say now. I was told by my FEO that renewals were in the 2-3 month range and are being treated as priority over new grants. Maybe worth a visit sooner than later!

I phoned about 2 weeks ago and got quite a ratty response which was pretty much along the lines of 'it's being processed, please wait patiently'. I'm hoping it's a case of no news is good news, and it'll come soon. However I'm led to believe there's still applicants from August last year waiting...

Morning all, Hope everyone is well. Im currently waiting on my SGC in central Scotland at the moment, and wondering if anyone else is in the same boat. I'm now at the 27 week mark, with the FEO visit completed around the 24th week. I know the local forces are suffering lately due to cut backs (particularly Fettes, Edinburgh) but 6 months seems excessive compared to other experiences on here. I know the licensing team are swamped right now so I'm not going to chase them and add to it. Anyone else in the same position? Thanks
