  1. Just been reading back though old posts about making gin , whisky , vodka  etc and thought with the abundance of berries and such I would have a go myself . So have done . sloe gin ,damson rum and gin and a blackberry whisky . And can’t wait though I see a lot of people rate the vodka with raspberry, blackberries etc so tempted to give that a go . Hardest part now is leaving them for the required time though I’ve read you can decant the blackberry whisky after 6 weeks so going to try that and leave the rest till just before Christmas. Hoping it will be a success as already frozen more blackberry, sloe and damsons for more just the alcohol is so darn expensive!!!

  2. Right are they sour ? As I was looking over the bush that was laden with them and tried a couple all were hard but dark in colour or starting to rot which I obviously didn’t try !! Damson are sweet right ? As I collect a load somewhere else looked the same but were lovely and sweet like a plum but looked exactly the same

  3. How's everyone been getting on so far this season?

Had my first day out at Grafham yesterday.  Was pretty tough but I managed 3 fish . 1 to a tungsten headed bloodworm and 2 on boobies (Not my favourite way of fishing but when needs must ) water is starting to clear and the fish are starting to hit buzzers

Using a fly line is all about making the weight of the flyline do the work, use the weight of the line (when partially lifted from the water) to place the line (mend it) where you want it! Many moons ago I regularly fished the loughs in Ireland, shortlining with a team of wet flies downwind, in front of a drifting boat.......the line wasn't usually on the water long enough to create a belly in the line!....if you are nymphing from a drifting boat, especially at distance, a crosswind will put a belly in the line........either continual mending, fishing directly downwind or adjusting the retrieve (keeping up with the drift of the boat) with a shorter line could all be worth trying?........

Thank you for all the advice . That's the thing I I am always fishing a drifting boat downwind so can't see why it keeps happening.  Think I might try shorter casts next time. I know when you.bank fish you want to let you flies drift round in the wind and make that belly to fish nymphs

Do you use a drogue to slow your drift?

I do normally but yesterday there was no need for one on Grafham really was still having the issue

If the line is bellying to the left, lift your rod tip which lifts the belly clear of the water and at the same time, with a rolling circular motion of your wrist place the line to the right!......Difficult to explain!

That makes sense think I'm trying to do it with my rod tip too low . Also think im letting too much of a bow get in it before I try to mend.  Should I mend as soon as I see a bow . Or is it cause I'm actually not retrieving fast enough to keep on contact as the boat drifts to my nymphs ?

  6. Hi all just a quick question when fishing nymphs from a drifting boat no matter how I retrieve (as in just keeping up with my nymphs as the boat drifts onto them ) my line starts arcing to one side and getting a belly in it even though my rodtip is only a inch or two off the surface.  I've heard people say mend the line but how ? Do you just flick a little section at the end or lift the whole line and throw slack into it ?? As when flicking a little section it just comes round just as fast and surely lifting the whole line will only scare any fish in the area ??

    Many thanks

  7. Yes can't wait for season but think my start will be delayed by the wind was hoping to fish Grafham next week but doesn't look to promising.  KFC we will share a boat hopefully a couple of times this season and have as much sucess and we did last time.  Good luck with your new syndicate

Hoping to get to pistfords a few times this season as well

  8. Well having got a meat grinder about 3 years ago and using it once then putting it in the cupboard I decided last week to get it back out and give it a whirl . Well since then.  I have made rabbit and pigeon burgers both amazingly tasty and simple just mincing with streaky smoked bacon , minced venison and made chilli and a delightful shepards pie . Now can't decide what else to put through it duck,  partridge,  pheasant, goose ? So many choices and so many fantastic recipes and meals can be had . What are others favourite things to do with minced meat ? Thinking of having a crack at some sausages soon 🤔 but never really had a tasty game sausage yet 🤔🤔

  9. We are on the Essex/herts border and noticed a complete collapse in the rabbits in the last 12 months.  We would annually take 2000-2500 rabbits and this last year we took just over 200 and stopped going out . And at this very moment we've never seen so few . We've had rhd1 in this area since the since the 90s as sent a sample to defra who confirmed this . so it must be rhd2.  A friend in Wiltshire who has a 1000 acres says he has the same healthy population he has always had . ? So seems to be certain areas . Some fear it will be worse then when mixy first struck .

  10. I always use fibre unless shooting clays.  This year on the pheasants I decided to treat myself to some hull high pheasant and hull high pheasant extreme both 32g 5s fibre and i couldn't have been more impressed.  I don't shoot many pheasants only shoot a few beaters and walk around day and found these really dropped them . I used to use clear pigeon 32g 6 fibre but after trying these won't be going back for pheasants.

Though I keep the clear pigeons for pigeons as I have always found them very effective on them
