Cheers Dave, didnt know you had a muzzle loader, would be very interesting to see some pics of your collection
Will pm sometime!

I can’t comment on the copper coated stuff but used bismuth in my muzzle loader this week on ducks and it was lethal when I did my bit. Would be no issue in Damascus barrels as far as I can see.

Assuming you are going to be shooting over decoys if the guide does his job and the geese come in those cartridges will be more than enough. These will be 25 to 30 yd birds so make sure you open your chokes up to no more than half and preferably a quarter. It is all about the patten! One of the best old boys I shot with over decoys used 30 gm fives but never took long shots. Anything below a 3 lead won’t give pattern in the loads you talk about.
I look forward to hearing were you went and how you got on.
enjoy

Fantastic. Glad to see how it has all come together. You just need to do your bit now and pull the trigger at the right time!

Really hacks me off that we are seeing the extinction of a species and doing chuff all! My river,The Nith, is dead. Predators everywhere and people think they are cool watching cormorants, herons, mergansers fishing the heart out of it in the centre of Dumfries!

Nith Inshore Rescue has just taken delivery of one to replace its defender as an emergency vehicle. Very recent but seem happy with it just now.

As there is a wildfowling section on the site which I post to from time to time why is a separate forum needed if we just use this?

I am definitely on your side with this one!
I have seen people use that exact same heavy load to shoot traditional flat land partridges over hedges. No doubt with ridiculously tight chokes as well. And yet I find 28 grams of No.6 or 7 work perfectly well through an imp cyl against Welsh pheasants.
Many folk really do have little idea.I would like to be a little more charitable and say that people really have no experience of what a lightly bored gun and 28gm cartridge can do. They have never patterned a gun with little choke and a light load out at 40 yds. They have been seduced by the cartridge manufacturers hype and what they have heard. Light chokes are for skeet, which they don’t shoot, so those choke tubes stay in the box and many fixed choke guns are tightly choked and never altered.

Avoid going too light. I did that when my daughter joined me at the age of 28. Started with a light 20 bore and it just wasn’t suitable. When we found a LH silver pigeon that fitted her at a little over 7lb it was perfect and she still has it. As said above ladies guns are generally stocked to suit there physical attributes.

I would just put the barrels and fore end in the cabinet and leave the stock out until the pad has dried. Happy new year Dave
Makes more sense, thanks. Not sure why I didn’t think of that doooooooooh!🤔

When you say 1200 is the max pressure for muzzle velocity? Because I've looked on the gamebore website and the only figure on their cartridges close to 1200 is the muzzle velocity.
Sorry, as you can tell, this is all relatively new to me. Just don't want to buy a gun not fit for purpose.
Thanks
Maximum Pressure. I don’t think you will find any U.K. cartridges approaching this pressure due to CIP rules although others may tell me I am wrong. Best speak to your gunshop so they can explain it all to you as you are going to be using 3” magnum cartridges. If they are selling you the gun they have an obligation to make sure you understand what you are buying if they are any good.

My Dickson has a leather pad. I was out today and it was wet as an otters pocket. My usual procedure is to strip and dry the gun off with kitchen roll and run a patch through the barrels. I then stand everything to one side to warm up before a second dry to remove lingering condensation before a thorough clean. Trouble is I now have a dry gun but still damp leather pad. The gun will have to go back in the cabinet tonight for security with a damp pad. I will store barrels up and check everything again tomorrow.
anything else I should think of other than to check all the guns as I am introducing something damp into an otherwise dry cabinet? I will put kitchen roll under the pad to absorb moisture.

Welcome.
12 speaks for itself
76 is chamber length in mm
1200 is the maximum pressure
cartridges have this information on the box so best go through with your local gunshop. Ask for wildfowling loads that equate to these parameters in whatever projectile material you prefer then pattern them.

I've got a tub of alliant steel. Would this work for the 8, with bismuth/lead?
I am not aware of anyone loading AS in 8 bore. I use blue dot.

An interesting article which raises issues that will need to addressed. It is not the mere designation as a National Park that is the issue so much as the regulations that go with it. With the current record of the Welsh Government and their total lack of knowledge of land management it does not bode well in the Principality. Conservation, country sports, and agriculture can work in harmony if given the opportunity. My fear is that our urban society and its Beatrix Potter view of nature will not allow that opportunity.

BP is wonderful stuff. You need two licenses. The first to acquire and keep from Police Scotland and one to transport from HSE. The load I have in my BP Muzzle loading book is 4 1/2 drams of black powder and 1 1/2 ozs of lead for ten bore.

Nice looking gun.
I have nicer guns than the Purdey I am looking at, however the new barrels was the big seller for me. Still making up my mind. Barrels were probably a year old when they were opened up, so I'm not concerned about the barrel condition. The original chokes from Purdey were 1/4 and 1/2, however with this opened up it has tightened them. I was hoping this would be for when I needed to shoot standard steel. I have several original barrels from 1900 and some have been lapped out and it is noticeable. These barrels are as good as I've seen. But the ejector issue has changed my mind. Thanks again for advice and opinions
Very glad I have joined this forum. Nice to be able to talk old guns to people. I was hoping to stop another gun heading across the pond!
I follow your thought process on new barrels. I bought a Dickson a few years ago for the reasons you set out. In my case not by the original maker but by McKay Brown so as good as it gets in my view.

To be honest I post very little about my wildfowling trips despite keeping a detailed diary of all shooting and fishing trips since 1982. Part of me as a Wildfowler harks back to when you kept your successes, and many failures, to yourself. Perhaps I should share more on the forum?

And to balance it up my son posted a parcel in Stevenage, paid first class and no more. Arrived the next day in Dumfries so first class service indeed!

I would be interested to hear others opinion about loading for the above, 10 bore 3.5 chamber nitro proofed 1977, Im looking at low pressure, 1-1/4 to 1 3/8 oz, Lead, Bismuth, also quite interested in BP... What would you load ?
I used to load 1 3/8oz in a 2 5/8” chambered Damascus 10 bore and found it very effective out to 40 yds. It was my preferred gun over decoys. It might be worth trying some of Alan Myers shortcase loads packed out for that chamber/cartridge length.

Pm me your email address. I can let you have lead data which you can work on for bismuth. I might also have some bismuth data about, not sure as I don’t use it. Frankly you will have difficulty getting any suitable powder at present!

Can’t answer the question but I keep a copy on my mobile phone.
