  1. Got a phone call Thursday from one of our farmer's, "just drilled the last two field's and there's plenty about if you fancy a trip out". Friday afternoon found me finishing work rather early and driving up to the farm for a bit of recon. The field's he was talking about were about 1.5 miles from the yard but luckily the tracks were dry so i could drive to them. One of the field's is situated between two woods with a small group of tree's in the middle and the pigeon's were pouring out of one wood past the group and into the other wood there were thousand's of them.Got all excited and phoned my friend up" Get your gear sorted we are in for a good day tomorrow will meet you at the farm at 7.45am", to save time in the morning i picked two spots for hide building so the day was set.

That night it rained all the way through until about 6.30am, at least it had stopped raining before we started shooting and thought no more of it. I arrived at the farm and my friend pulled up just as the Farmer rang me " it's a good idea if you stay off the track's today as we have had alot of rain over night" as he was on the phone i had one hand on the bins watching the Pigeon's 1.5 miles away pouring out of the wood's, my heart sank " what did the farmer want" my friend asked" oh just to stay off the track's" i replied, his face changed as if the world had ended, well it had in two minute's we had gone from a day which promised to be a red letter one to one of disappointment.

"There's only one thing for it" "what's that" i replied "walk" now bearing in mind the amount of kit we lug about my reply went along the line's of "don't be so bloody stupid" fifteen minutes later saw us stripping down our kit to make it all lighter as if we were in a hot air balloon about to crash into a mountain side. The big question was how many cartridges do we carry as we would not be popping back to get some more, anyway we decided on 150 each and we set off.

Twenty minutes later with sweat pouring from me i looked back to see my mate thirty yards behind " stop at the top of the hill for a bloody rest" he shouted.Ten minutes later we were moving again this part of the journey was downhill so it was not to bad, that's a lie it was bloody terrible slipping and sliding on the mud.Fifty minutes later found us at the base of our chosen field sitting on our stools eyeing up the journey in front of us like two climbers at the base of mount Everest, the group of tree's were nearer but to reach them was an uphill walk across a muddy field, we set off taking deep breath's and one step at a time my legs were burning, thirty five minutes later found us at the spot but as we looked back there was a trail of bags and kit we had dropped on the way up the hill so we had to go back and collect - 1.5 miles took just under two hours to reach, we shot 180 pigeon's and the farmer came and picked us up later in the farm truck. Is this the record for the longest walk/ time taken for a days pigeon shooting ?

  2. I know this has been discussed on a previous post but i have just purchased some and plan to use them on Saturday for the first time and have a few questions which were not covered,

1 - How do you secure them in the middle of a field or can you lay them across the ground?

2 - Do you position them before setting up and then once set up nip round and light them then?

3 - I know this may seem stupid but if you pack up before the complete rope has burnt through is there anyway in which you can save the remaining bangers [ as i said this may be a very stupid question but as i have never used them i will ask anyway]

    Cheers
