Steve29
Hi all I regularly lamp rabbits for a local farmer with my .22 Webley Stingray carbine (nice rifle!). I usually use the stalking approach and manage to sneek up on plenty. I've never gotten set in before in one place but have found a really reliable spot so plan to try it tonight. One main question, do you pick up each rabbit as you drop it or leave them until you're ready for home? I usually pick up as I kill but only do one stalk in one location each night then move on, so i'm not concerned with spooking any others in the location. Am I likely to do this by picking up each time? Cheers Steve
humperdingle
If you're moving along each time, i'd probably lie waiting for half an hour to see if ny more will pop out, picking up the dead bunnies after each half hour, gutting as you go. MrTom
we shoot them with rapids & 410's etc, we collect them as we gun them, if we dont we loose them in shadows etc.
MerseaDavid
If I am walking/driving round I will pick them up as I shoot them but if I am staying in one place I will only pick them up if they are blocking a hole that the rabits are coming out of apart from that I will leave them until I head home
Steve29
If I am walking/driving round I will pick them up as I shoot them but if I am staying in one place I will only pick them up if they are blocking a hole that the rabits are coming out of apart from that I will leave them until I head home That would be my preferred option. Anyway, gave it a go last night and turns out my shooting buddy has got little/no patience, so we packed up after about 15 mins of drawing blanks and went and did some stalking instead. Ended up coming home empty handed having not got one shot off!!!!!! To be fair to him, one of the main problems is the location of the sweet spot. Basically, wheat field to the left covered in rabbits (my permission) and maize field to the right (no permission) with a hedgerow running between the two; burrows are in the hedge. We stalked up the hedge into the wind and got laid in but the only place to lay was on the wheat field, so we were probably quite conspicuous! I think we might try a hide next time, set up in the hedge and looking out onto the wheat. That way rabbits will come out from either side of us and feed out in front, thats the plan anyway! cloud9
just have a go at lyin at the hedge m8 dont worrie if the wind is blowing in to the hedge as your low and out of the way we lie with the wind blowin right at the bunnys sometimes, dont really matter much to us IF we are still enough lol we still get them coming out but normaly a litte bit more out but we wait they come closer or more out into the field, but im the same when its cold i have little patience half hour of nothing in ice cold wind and im off stalking lol helps me warm up
Westcountryman
If I lamp bunnies, I keep moving. Find a route and work it. If your ground allows, you can either do a big circuit, or cover a smaller one twice. The only way I would "lay up" would be if I was in a building looking out at the quarry or in a car.
