tom_0787
Following on from advice in another thread, I have ordered a sportdog hunter 800. Im am not happy to use *** untill i am 100% on how and when to use it. i have done a fair bit of research but can anyone reccomend a website, guide or book on using an e-collar? The problem with magnum is chasing other dogs and paying no attention to me once he sees a potential playmate.

tom_0787
Cheers for that Alex, think i saw that video when i looked into them first time round. What i really want is something more in depth. like how to find the suitable attention grabbing power level without the dog being aware of the collar. Also any users put there, do you use a tone feature. If so how? As a reward or a warning?
Al Downie
Tips: 1) Collar must be tight - much tighter than a normal collar, to ensure good contact with skin at all times. 2) In dry conditions, experiment with the back of your own hand to find a level that causes you slight discomfort. Then put the collar on the dog and the remote ccontrol in your pocket. Wait till the dog is busy doing something, then press the single-pulse button while your hand is still in your pocket (don't be tempted to point the control at the dog like a Star Trek phaser!). The dog probably won't even notice anything at that level, so adjust the level up a tiny bit and try again, and again, until you reach a level that makes the dog jump a wee bit. There's no need to set it so high that the dog squeaks - all you want is to re-capture the dog's attention. When the dog does jump, it'll probably look at you, which is the point when you can regain control and issue (or re-issue) your whistle peep. 3) In wet conditions, you'll probably need to increase the level. In my case, in dry weather I have my remote set to 4.5 (on a scale of 0-10), and when the dog is soaking I can turn it up to 10 and he only just flinches slightly! In the rain, I tend to use the 'vibrate' feature rather than the electric pulse. 4) Be *very* careful with the continuous pulse - it's *much* more efective than the single zap, and you could easily hurt the dog if you've adjusted the level away up in wet conditions 5) If you use (or intend to use) the dog for picking up, NEVER operate the collar when the dog is carrying something in its mouth! It'll drop whatever it's carrying and most likely be reluctant to pick it up again. 6) Be very sparing with the collar - try not to let it become a crutch that you come to rely on. Try to use it as a training tool, and work towards a day when you won't have to use it at all. There are loads of different philosophies when it comes to use of eCollars. Search the web, and read up about how the Americans use them - it's quite different to how most folk use them over here. Choose bits which you think will be useful to you, and experiment to find the method that suits your dog and the problem you're trying to fix. Good luck! badshot
The dog whisperer used one to great effect, I don't know if it is available it was on sky three freeview sometime back. I was always told it is better to use the collar on high setting straight away not gradually build up to it. This way the dog will only need a few zaps to learn that chasing off with other dogs is not allowed. You should have the collar on for a few weeks before using it or the dog will learn very quickly that it is every time the collar goes on that it gets a shock. I know, I have had it happen with one of my dogs that chased lorries and bikes, collar on, nothing not a woof or movement at all. Collar off, and the damned thing would run for miles alongside the road, inside the field but still pretty unnerving for some of the cyclists having a GSD chasing them. I think my preference now would be no noise as the dog will associate the noise with a shock. Just remembered the dog whisperers name, Cesar Milan, the things he gets dogs to do is amazing and would only use a shock collar for situations where the dogs life is endangered. My better half was a bit of a fan as she likes doing a bit of dog training.
