casts_by_fly
Hi All, What birds do you use for training a pointer? In the US it would be pigeons (feral) and quail plus some chukkars thrown in for good measure all depending on what is available locally. There are game farms around so finding birds usually isn't a problem. What birds do you use here for training pointers? Quail can't be released. Feral pigeons can't be trapped and released. Pheasants don't hold for points and I'd imagine getting hold of partridge would be tough on any regular basis. Any thoughts? I was thinking to do a quail pen over the winter and getting some quail, but that's a no go now. Thanks, Rick
butcherboy
When I had HPR's the group I trained with usedeither bob White Quail or pigeons. You aren't releasing them so no need to worry. Best on your own ground where you can leave a call back pen to round then up.. Pigeons can be dizzied & flushed with your foot when the dogs had held it's point. clearly they then just fly home to the loft.
casts_by_fly
butcherboy, I thought that a quail recall pen and planting them in the field would constitute releasing them. Quail would be my first choice so if I can do that I will. The farmer I rent the house from and whose land I shoot is pretty laid back. I'm sure he'd have no problem with my building a recall pen and putting it out in the field. Thanks, Rick
butcherboy
butcherboy, I thought that a quail recall pen and planting them in the field would constitute releasing them. :( You won't be releasing them, they'll have escaped Get the Derry Argue video "Game for gundogs" from ebay. I would have gave you my copy but already passed it on a few years back. Edited November 10, 2009 by butcherboy
WGD
You could use quail in a small cage to get the dogs to point if you want to obey the letter of the law; obviously no flush after that. But I am in agreement with butcherboy re the quail recall pen, it would be fine, as would dizzied homing pigeons?
