MC
I am currently making a few batches of sloe gin and was thinking about adding something to it for a different flavour. Last years batch had cinnamon bark added which was good and added a lovely background hint to it. This year I was thinking maybe a vanilla pod or two in one lot. This then got me thinking what about something like Star Anise? I don't know if the aniseed flavour will take over or make it taste bloody awful. Anyone got any ideas? Have you done anything similar? Cheers MC
Beardo
you could try adding apples, i reckon that would work. not sure about the star anise though, think that may clash. Mint should work ginger should work nicely
MC
Not sure about apples, With the sugar content and apples you would end up with cider, or something so alcoholic you could run a dragster on it. Ginger I reckon would work, as would lemon probably. I sometimes have sloe gin and lemonade in the summer.
malkiserow
How about a hint of "5 spice" ? I like Damson Gin and damson Vodka (not together!) Another idea...... I use this with apple juice.... Angostura Bitters. Not tried it with Sloe Gin but it might work well .... just go easy with it when you shake the bottle, a few drops might be all you need. If you try it please let me know......

MC
I will definetly try the vanilla, the almonds sound good. A sort of bakewell tart flavoured gin Edited November 11, 2009 by MC
beretta
almonds make ie very mellow, sort of takes the edge off, a bit like water in whisky
smiiithy
I added some and some almond flavouring and a touch of vanilla flavouring. Haven't had sloe berry gin before but read a few things on the sloe.biz forum about almond and vanilla giving it a nice mellow flavour. It’s due for a tasting actually. smiiithy
By the way I added this at the point I put the berries in the gin not at bottling in the hope that when I make sloe truffles there will be at least a slight taste of the almond and vanilla. I bought my girlfriend a £25 Easter egg from Thornton’s and she hasn't even touched it since she's decided she's gone off chocolate but I'm going to put that to good use. At least I got a decent Easter egg in return - a 1.5kg Thornton’s Giant Bunny, that's half the weight of my rifle!
