Why have scopes got bigger?

Since I managed to mount my 1978 bought 3-6*45 OPTIMA scope on the Quad, on low mounts too

And still able to change the barrel( after I removed the magazine )

But it is absolutely as far back on the action as it will go

However at 310mm long

For the magnification it is as short as any of the other scopes I had thought about buying

?

I am aware I could mount a longer scope or a similar length one furthur forward on semi high mounts

BUT

I would have hoped that optical progress would have meant that scopes had got smaller

Or is it a case of

" ye canny deny the laws of Physics Captain"

i too find high mag scopes very long and then find the eye relief very fussy.i have a eb 3-9-40 on my 22lr and it`s just nice however the 6-24-42 eb on my hmr is an entirely different story.i`d stick to a good quality low mag scope with good optics ,failing that i believe you need to spend big money to get a reasonable high mag scope

i did suspect that the scope length was connect with the higher magnifications

I was looking at some of the premier brands in hope of a tidier package

No luck as yet

Since there is ****** all wrong with my 33 year old scope

hey ho.... no VALID excuse for buying another one
