njc110381
If it's made by Zeiss it's going to be pretty good. In low light the maximum exit pupil that your eye can deal with is 7mm, any bigger and it's wasted. So with your 50mm objective up to 7x zoom it will be as good as it can get. After that it all comes down to the quality of the glass and coatings, which with a Zeiss is going to be near perfect. When working out the exit pupil you divide the diameter of the objective lens by the magnification number so ideal is 6x42, 7x50, 8x56 etc. You may already know that, but I thought I'd point it out
Bobbo.
Hi Bob, I imported the 3-9x50 Conquest from the States, they are assembled in the states, the parts are made in Germany, as far as I know you cannot buy them new over the counter in the UK, it cost me around £360 due to the exchange rate, but the Customs & Excise got thier filthy paws on it, and by the time I had paid them and the post office to release it , it almost cost the same price as a similar scope in rip of Britain, about £430 in total, but all in all it was still cheaper had it been for sale in the UK. At a game fair this year there was a Zeiss stall, I apraoched the guy running the stall to have a chat about them (the Conquest), the words were barely out of my mouth when he said, "they are made for the American market, and should not be in this country" then blanked me, and walked away, so speaks for itself, people are importing them (no law against that) because of the rip off prices in the UK, and obvously it was affecting this guys busines, tough!!! As for the scope itself I have it on my .22-250, and have shot a few roe and foxes with it, ( I can shoot roe with the .22-250 as I live in Scotland), I find it very sharp, really fast to focus, and great in low light conditions, I use it mostly set at either 7 or 8 times magnification. To be honest, I think it would be a waste on a .17, I think it really belongs on a centre fire, I have a Bushnell dusk to dawn 6-18x50 on my .17, and it does the business for me. Bobbo.
Thanks for the advise. been offered 1 for £449 new is this a fair price? Are you buying it new? Lets put it this way, I've just been on the net, the scope is around the $599.99 mark in the US thats around £354, so make up your own mind, £499 in rip off Britain, a difference of, £145 no I don't think it's worth it, you can always try and import it, or do you know of anyone going to the states on hols. Forgot to add, as far as I'm aware the warranty only covers the US it is not a worldwide warranty. Edited December 14, 2009 by Bobbo. scolopax
Exactly the same scope as I have on my rifle. My brother brought it back for me after a family holiday to Florida. Good scope, no complaints, but as its the only one I have used on a centefire I have nothing else to compare it to.
