Huntsman Luke
I was recently given some cartridges by a good friend and i was seeing if i could use them in my shotgun. every thing fits (chamber size ect.) except i don't know if my gun is nitro proofed (I am not very good at the intellagence side of shotguns). so i was wondering if someone could tell me wether a 12 bore mossberg pump is nitro proofed. The carts i wanted to try are: eley grand prix paper case eley maximum cranleigh field sports. i would appreciate any info thanks. luke
Gemini
Have a look on the barrel/action and you will find a proof mark with BNP on it. Can’t think of any Mossberg pump-actions that wouldn’t be nitro-proofed. G.M. Edited September 5, 2005 by Gemini

Huntsman Luke
ok mate , do you think the cartridges will be safe to use as they are a few years old. :yp: thanks luke
Gemini
As long as they look intact and the bases haven’t gone rusty, then they should be OK to use. I have used old Eley shells that have been in a cupboard for a number of years without any problems. Cut the top off one and see if the lead shot is nice and bright, or whether it has gone white or crumbly with oxidisation. If it just looks dull then it will be alright to use, but if you are worried about it take it into a gunsmiths and ask their opinion, otherwise send me the entire stock and I will happily dispose of them in a safe manner for you. :yp: G.M. dunganick
if you look at that picture with all the ratings on it, and look at your guns barrels, they should hold one of these marks, this means that you can find out what they are proofed too, and if they are nitro proofed
Gemini
Luke if you look at the flats on the Baikal you will see those marks. They may vary slightly depending on whether they were done by the London proof house or the Birmingham one. The BNP stands for Nitro-proof. The 12-70 stands for 12 gauge 70mm (2¾) The 850 BAR shows that it isn’t magnum proofed, although yours may have a different figure such as 1200 bar or 1340 bar etc. If yours has 12-70 on it then you can safely use 2¾” shells through it without any worries. :yp: G.M. Bazooka Joe
Huntsman Luke, I would be careful using old paper case cartridges in your mossberg pump. We were shooting Geese in the Newton Stewart area a long time ago, & were in a gun shop one day, when a bloke entered the shop, pulled a mossberg pump out of the gun bag, & began to describe the problem he had with the gun, to the shop owner. He had being down the fore shore on the morning with the same gun, never had a shot, but when he came to unload, he couldn't. What had happened was, the cartridges had got wet some how, & the extractors couldn't eject the cartridge. Obviously, because the cartridge had swollen with the damp. You have never seen as many people duck at once as he swung round with the gun belly height, to show the rest of the shop what had happened. The only way to remove it safely, was for the shop owner ( who phoned the police before he did it ) to pull the trigger. Which he did in the river opposite. I dare bet both your Biakel, & Mossberg are Nitro proofed. Get them checked properly, & stick with modern ones. Bazooka Joe B)

Bazooka Joe
I would have gave a £1000 to see the expression on everyone's face in that shop that day. You can laugh about it now, but it was pretty serious at the time. To be honest I don't think anyone batterd an eye lid when he pulled the trigger, way of life in Scotland.
