fatjoe
hi guys i need a bit of advise regarding my new ferrets, i have just been given 2 ferret jills who are approx 6 months old, the reason they were given to me was because the guy who had them couldnt take the risk of his kids getting hurt as they are both biters, the advise i need is a) whats the best way to stop them biting, at present ive been giving them a few drops of ferretone whilst im stroking them how much time do i need to spend with them to reassure them im the good guy c) how much food should i be feeding them and how often and what food would you guys recommend, fresh or dried i would like to work them eventually but need advise on the best ways to do this any advise would be appreciated cheers joe
TomV
lots of handling is the best way, one of mine used to nip but after lots of handling every day she is now very tame. Its best to feed them twice a day, the most important thing to remember is that they should always have enough food available all the time. Dried ferret food is the best. I buy in bulk 15kg for £16, lasts months.
Ferretertom
Im guessing your compleately new to ferrets when they bite you can rub your hands in something bitter like ginger so they dont like the taste say ''no''. I have 14 ferrets and i give them a varied diet they have ferret biscuits whitch i find rather expencive! Cat biscuits is mixed with it to bulk it out they get fed raw rabbit and rabbit offal all game and an egg every 1/2 wks. They also like shop brought liver occasionly and butchers off cuts whitch are cheep aswell as this i sometimes give them tinned cat food. chris.csb
hiya mate iv had ferrets for a few years now i got a hob n 2 jills but only got 1 of the jills today shes a bit nippy at moment but the way i do it to tame them is i spit on the back of my hand n let them drink it this way they know the hands there for drinking and not to nip at and usually if u feed them at the same time everyday n handle the same time they get into a routine and feel safe and shud not bite!!!! if you are going to be working them you will be better squeeking them of getting some bells n ringin them when you walk up the cage with food this way they will come out of the holes easier!!! tis is what i use n i never have any problems with my ferret "touch wood" let me know how you get on chris!!!
