Hi Guys,

i really need some advice, im going bunny hunting at around 5am tommorow with a pcp 22 air rifle.

this will be the first time i have hunted this piece of land, the problem is, the land which is about 1 acre is really long and skinny.[about 5 meters wide]

what would you guys sugest as the best tacticts? as most of the bunnys are spotted somewhere in the middle of the land.

if i sit and wait at one end will i be close enough to make a clean kill? - how close will i be able to get without being seen, smelt or heard?

or would walking up and down the legnth of the land [stalking] be a better bet?

please help me as i have been on two or three unsucseful hunts recentley.

thanks

fisrtly is this an allotment your shooting on?

secondly get on yer belly and crawl LOL

seriously its goingnto be the onyl way you will get near them, if you have a hedge line you can crawl along the bottom of all the better, but work out which way the wind is blowing and get set up so your within about 40 yards of where the rabbits are and just tuck yourself in the best you can and wait till them come out.

If need be you can get soime netting and pull it over you very usefull if your shooting with little or no cover.

as for how close you can get it all depends on the wind and how good your field craft is

as your shooting in a very narrow piece of land be VERY carful about where your pellets are goingto go if you miss the target, as it is an offence for your pellet to leave the boundary on which you have permision to shoot

hope this helps you out a little

  • 2 weeks later...

if you see rabbits and they all shoot down there holes they will be back out in 15 to 20 mins so get your self down wind and wait for them to come out is a good way ,,head shots only and if you hit one and its dead leave it there dont get up and move as you will be waiting 20 mins again, stay put and with in a few mins you should of shot another one ,rabbits dont mind seeing another dead rabbit they will walk just past it :D

Leaving the rabbit after it is shot is a good idea. IF you rush to collect the rabbit, you will taint the ground with your scent. This can also be said for walking up and down, this wont really work either.

I would check the wind, and approach the main area in advance of them coming out and sit in wait. Remember though, don't get inpatient, if you see one come out leave it alone. This will encourage the others to come out. When your happy that they are sufficiently unwise to your presence, take aim at an outsider and squeeze your shot out. If your lucky, you won't have caused to much disturbance. Again don't get inpatient, wait a few minutes to let them settle again and start over.

Of course this doesnt work all the time, but for me, patience is the key.

Good luck.

Axe.
