Shoot let down badly

I was a regular beater infact THE REGULAR BEATER for a shoot over a season giving both time to shoot days as well as work parties, I have the outlay of the fuel to get there n back, I provide the use of an air scenting dog ect ect ...I dont get payed, I dont get any rough/pigeon shooting,I dont even get a brew on a cold day...the only thing you got for all your sweat n ripped waterproofs was the beaters day held on boxing day. however upon arriving on said beaters day i found i was alone... no1 even bothered telling me they couldnt be bothered, a few days later i managed to get hold of the cpt and was told in a rather mater of fact way that as theres only me really beaten it had been decided to cancel it.

I was disgusted by the way i was taken for granted n in 1 phone call felt all the pleasure beating gave me bleed away while mentally taking stock of all the weekends i could have been shooting or enjoyin my fine nubile lass..

both me and the shoot learned something and it boils down to this... beaters are a resource vital to the day and as such should be appreciated cos they can be gone in an instant

look after them and be grateful because there will always be a shoot not to far away that will

Cheers guys, I've a load of offers from help from here and the shoot now has enough beaters courtesy of PW, for which they are VERY grateful!

AB I think you're right about spreading yourself too thin. I'm guilty of it myself this season. It's only my second seasons beating and I'm on 3 shoots. I have managed to juggle them all but the missus is a bit cheesed off as she's hardly seen me at weekends all season, which is compounded by the fact I work away from home midweek! I will cut it back to the 1 or 2 smaller ones next year.

HB that's a p!ss poor way to be treated  I seem to be very lucky as all three of the shoots I beat on really value their beaters. Benefits vary - all pay, two at £25 and one at £20, but the later (the subject of this thread) is only half a day. 2 do beaters days. 1 provides a hot home cooked lunch with beer and port on tap, another provides a can of beer and home made cake. On all 3 you can always take a brace of pheasants or partridge. These are asides though, the banter is great the countryide stunning and the guns and keepers ALWAYS say thank you :hmm:
