air gunner
what pellet will have the flattest trajectory in a gas ram air rifle? Heavy or light? At a distance of 50meters?
jackinbox99
Presumably it depends upon the calibre. a .177 is very flat compared to a .22 which has a pronounced curve to it. Ive not done any experimentation on pellet weights yet, but id expect a lighter pellet to be slightly flatter trajectory.
air gunner
Sorry I forgot to post one of the more important facts. I'm asking about .22 pellets. I agree with you on the lighter pellet however will a lighter pellet lose speed quicker therefore have a sharper drop off point? And if it does at what distance would it drop? ttalbot09
the flattest trajectory pellet iv found so far and was reccomended by shopkeeper as flattest was webley mosquito in both .177 and .
air gunner
I will be trying a tin of them tommorow then. This pellet nonsence is quite annoying. Now let's say these pellets have a great trajectory will they have killing power at 45-50 yrds with my bisleys I can take rabbit at 50yrds with good conditions however my distance judging is not great hence want for flatter trajectory. So if I am shooting in a paddock of know length then the long shots are fine. However pigeons in trees I can't judge so I want the flat trajectory for easy holdover/under gaps. jackinbox99
I have the same problem as you mate. I use .22 and its sometimes hard to judge distances in the field. In my back garden, which is upto 50yards long, i can hit 2p targets from 20 yards onwards perfectly everytime - but thats only because i can judge distances in my garden easier. I find in the field, practise makes perfect, and ive gotten used now to pacing out shots to see if my estimation of distance is correct. I dont think there will be much noticable difference in trajectory between .22 pellets in a non FAC air-rifle to be honest. Maybe gettin a .177 is the answer? or look to get an FAC, as a .22 pushing out 22lb or more has a virtually flat trajectory from 10yards upto 45yards +. air gunner
thats quite cool i too have a garden range of 50 yrds and can do the same as you. its not impossible and normally i judge well enough for a kill if its say a rabbit on the ground. any way at 15 yrds i have a 3 mill hold under and at 45 yrds i have a 1 1/2 hold over its the close shots that screw up my shooting. anyway i went to the gun shop today and bought the mosquitoes. These pellets were frikin expensive for 250 its £7 i have not tested them yet however i am not too pleases as yet as they are so loose i can put one in and turn the barrel so the breach faces down and the pellet will fall out! does anyone have a technique to prime the pellet so that it fits your barrel perfectly? i saw advice on youtube that a guy was using to do this but not sure if he bought it or made it. anyone know exactly how much they weigh? they are not amazingly made but the case does come with a nice foam pad so no rattle however not £7 worth of pad. i cant complain yet though because i haven't tried them for drop and accuracy yet. slingshot
I have found in my XL .22 that i get a flatter trajectory from a lighter pellet i now use RWS Hobbys 11.5 grn i think, i find them great for 40ish yds i don't usually shoot much further but they hit hard (head shots only as they are flat head), i find that in the woods the flat trajectory helps a lot as you can squees a shot through gaps in branches, don't forget that for the same ftlb of energy a lighter pellet travels considerably faster. At 11.5 ftlb an 11.5 grn travels roughly 100ft ps faster than a 16 grn, take a look at these two sites may find something interesting and the RWS Hobbys are about £5/£7 for a 500 tin and really well made http://extorian.co.uk/shooting/pellets.html http://www.arld1.com/
air gunner
That's some useful first hand experiance cheers. I had a quick go with the webleys before it got dark after work and found my initial zero at 30 yrds to have the lighter pellet a good 4 inches below zero after a quick adjustment it is nearly on point and at a 15 yrd target I can aim directly at it and hit. With the heavy pellet I have to do a 3 mill hold under. Interesting to see the performance in day light before I go to a permission tommorow morning.
