SteveM
Hi all, Im currently after a cheap 4x4, for a bit of lamping and a general shooting motor. Im not after anything expensive, and my perms are pretty flat without any major offroading to be done (obv this doesnt mean that all will be) but this will be my first 4x4 purchase and the first time im looking for something to shoot from. I have read the topics that have related to this of late (very helpful thank you) and have deided to look at a Frontera sport 2.0 swb tommorow (a work colleague is selling it). I know it wont have much 'grunt' but your opinions would be greatly appreciated........ The cars details:- Vauxhall Frontera Sport S, 1996 (N reg). 77,000 miles. 2.0 L Petrol Full SH, T&T until nov 2010. Has just had new brakes and tyres all round, comes with all the standard mod cons + 'Pioneer CD system' - lol! It has also had a new water pump and timing belt recently installed. It is the model with the removeable rear section (roof), which I was hoping would be handy for shooting from?...... It is spotless inside and out (I have seen the car before, but going for a spin tommorow.) All for £1000. Im really just asking if this is a car worth buying? at a reasonable price? and will do the job adequately?..... And if anyone has or has had one, is there anything I should specifically be looking out for when driving / inspecting it (apart from the obv.-lol)? Thanks all.

COACH
Not the best but will do the job for a while if the land is quite flat. Lots of Pajero`s out there for a grand though, they are serious kit off and on road. Edited January 20, 2010 by COACH

Kilvy
Don't underestimate the frontera there a cracking motor ... come standard with protection underneath ... tank guard sump guard fuel lines guard if i remember rightly plus other bits ... cheap too lift the earlier ones as they have torsion bar suspension on the front and a simple set of shackles lift the rear about 2" all round decent set of A/T's or MT's and your sorted! ... saying that a grand is a tad high for a 96 plate it would have too be spotless for that! just be careful if you go down the lines of the Shogun/Pagero route if you do go for the 2800 and if poss manual there cracking motors when working well but when they go wrong the cost an arm and a leg! ... Good Luck!
SteveM
Thanks, to be fair, the price will be reasonably negociable. So I may get it for less if i want it. Will have a look, and not jump into anything (im pretty impulsive lol). Shooting from the back any good?
Windy
when i was in the market (and got a Fourtrak in the end) I looked at a Fronty Sport......was rusting badly on rear door, o/s front door. Lots of oil sprayed round the engine bay and stank of petrol inside!! Not saying they are bad......just look out for obvious things.
mrsitter
Hi, I have the same model on an r plate I've had it for 3 years or so and in general its been a good work horse, I use it alot for getting and disposing of building related materials and its been worth its weight in gold during the last 2 winters in yorkshire, its good enough off road cos the farmers obvisly don't want a vehicle trailing thru the fields when they are wet and boggy so it does me fine and yes its great when you take the top rear roof section off, it comes off easily and is great for shooting out of (you don't have that option with most other motors!), problems there have been a few, I have replaced both rear wheel bearings (a pain of ajob but if your half competent they can be done in a day or so, there will be a grumbling coming from the rear end (of the car) if they are on there way out), I got the fuel lines replaced cos they were completly knackered cost around £250 and I replaced one of the handbrake cables that had seized and it woz not working properly other than that just run of the mill stuff 1 battery, full exhaust etc. it needed a sill welding up for the mot this year but its to be expected with a motor of that age. Watch out for the steering also, they can wander and it will be a good hagling point but its easy to fix by tightening a couple of bolts. I would happily buy another hope this helps

Kilvy
I would say the sills are one of the first places to rot ... near the rear of the sill ...
Beardo
also check play in the steering - make sure it doesn't feel to 'loose'. i love my fronty to bits - cracking motor, and yeah the removable roof is a godsend for shooting. £1000 sounds a little expensive - i'd get that down to £800-£900 if i were you.
